Sunday Supper & Jazz-Gail Martin & The Unified Jazz Ensemble
7:00 PM - 9:30 PM

Here is a “new to us” jazz singer we have been wanting to book for eons! Gail Marten is sultry; she is sophisticated; she is soulful (without singing soul music, if you know what I mean). Check out her website which will introduce you to her voice with the song “I Fall in Love too Easily” – and you will fall in love with her too! And, here’s how one critic put it: "Gail Marten not only sings lyrics which tell a story, but recites a vivid prose which demonstrates that she has a hip awareness of life – delivered with a voice of sweetness and verve. She not only stirs passion, but she generates reflective thought. Delicious, as the melding of passion and intellect often is…the girl next door dressed in a black sheath!" Ms. Marten will be accompanied by Mike Noonan on piano, John Pineda on bass and Dominic Smith on drums.

Targeting microtentacles on circulating breast tumor cells to reduce metastasis
Stuart S. Martin PhD

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) can invade distant tissues and lie dormant for long periods. The eventual reemergence of these disseminated cells as metastatic tumors is the major cause of cancer patient death. Since even the best clinical imaging approaches available (MRI, PET/CT) are only able to detect tumors once they grow to a size of more than 10 million tumor cells, there is a compelling need to improve our to detect disseminated tumor cells and understand how to eradicate them. Unfortunately, current chemotherapies that target diving cells are ineffective at killing dormant tumor cells. The great majority of current cancer drug development focuses on inhibiting tumor cell growth or the invasion and motility of attached tumor cells. Comparatively little is known about how to destroy CTCs or the effects of existing chemotherapies on CTCs. Stuart's lab has recently discovered that detached and circulating breast tumor cells generate dynamic membrane microtentacles, that arise due to an imbalance in the cytoskeletal fibers that control cell shape. Since large epithelial tumor cells are crushed when pushed through narrow capillaries by blood flow, they are targeting microtentacles to reduce tumor cell reattachment and increase the fragmentation of CTCs. Surgery and chemotherapy given before surgery can increase CTCs up to 1000-fold, so understanding how CTCs reattach in distant tissues is essential to ensure that cancer drugs do not inadvertently increase metastasis while targeting cell division. Nearly 90% of human solid tumors are epithelial carcinomas, so the molecular regulators of CTC reattachment could impact many human cancers.
