NOVEMBER ART EXHIBITION
November 1 - 30, 2009 Janet Jeffers
>>View Image
Through the viewfinder of a camera, Janet Little Jeffers delights in exploring the unexpected and unexamined details of the natural and manmade world. Her photographs capture intriguing details that may surprise the viewer, inviting a closer look at subjects that may normally attract little attention.
An avid artist since childhood, Janet's creative pursuits led to a career as an award-winning graphic designer specializing in publications, and she has been awarded for work in the interior design field as well. While earning her B.A. from Towson University and an M.A. in Publications Design from University of Baltimore, she also worked as an announcer for radio stations in the Baltimore-Washington area, including the notable free-form music stations WHFS-FM and WRNR-FM. But ever since picking up her first SLR camera -- a trusty Pentax K1000 -- during her freshman year of college, photography has been her enduring passion.
Janet now photographs in digital format, using Nikon gear and a Mac-based digital darkroom. Her photography has been featured on book and CD covers, in films, galleries and private collections. In 2008 she was signed to international publishers Wild Apple Graphics.
Opening reception is Sunday, November 1st from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Justin Trawick
7:00 PM - 11:00 PMTrawick's musical career began more than 10 years ago when he found his father's old guitar under the stairs of his house. "He hadn't touched it in like 20 years," Trawick said. "I just started playing ever since."
Trawick studied piano in elementary school and also played alto saxophone in the jazz band from middle school through college. But the guitar always held a certain appeal to him, he said.
Trawick described his music as "urban folk rock" with modern beats and lyrics. He said the sound is "all encompassing of everything from bluegrass to hip-hop," and his songs are like vignettes of life. New material from Trawick includes a currently untitled song that is a "post-relationship song from a guy's viewpoint" and "Life," which Trawick said is a "real upbeat funky" song that shows influences from Jason Mraz. Trawick will open for Love Seed Mama Jump at Ned Devine's in Herndon on July 20. Visit www.myspace.com/justintrawick.$6.00 Cover Charge Learn More

Paul Geremia
8:00 PM - 11:00 PMFor almost forty years, Paul Geremia has survived solely by the fruit of his musical labours. Having abandoned all other means of support in 1966, he has been travelling far and wide ever since, performing in every capacity from street singing to club and concert bookings, throughout the U.S.A., Canada and Europe.
In the years since, Geremia has built a reputation as a first rate bluesman, songwriter, a "scholar" of early jazz and blues, and one of the best country blues fingerpickers ever with his tools - six and twelve-string guitars, harmonica, piano and a husky soulful voice - and with an innate sense of the humour as well as the drama of the music, he keeps traditional blues fresh and alive with his performances.

Tom Lagana
8:00 PM - 11:00 PM"Schematic," 2009 The Tom Lagana Group's second release, "Schematic," features seven inspired performances by a remarkable jazz trio destined to capture both critical and commercial acclaim. Joining the guitarist are Tom Baldwin on upright bass and Todd Harrison on drums, each providing noteworthy performances throughout. Dave Ballou also contributes his brilliant trumpet and flugelhorn artistry on three tracks. Lagana graduated from the Berklee College of Music and performs and teaches in the Annapolis, Maryland area. While one hears strong influences of Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, and John Scofield in the guitarist masterful playing, Lagana creatively incorporates their styles into his own unique voice. Throughout "Schematic" the guitarist effortlessly alternates between melodic and chromatic playing. The opening "Rub of the Green," brings to mind the landmark trio interplay of Metheny's "Bright Size Life." Whereas the title track offers some blistering bop infused soloing showcasing Dave Ballou's extraordinary trumpet. Although an accomplished classical guitarist, on this release Lagana concentrates on his electric playing. However, on the dreamy ballad "Lauren's Song," the guitarist displays his delicate, introspective acoustic. Tom Lagana's "Schematic" is highly recommended for listeners wanting to hear a fresh and revitalizing voice in world of contemporary jazz guitar. © James Scott

Neil Harpe & Erin Harpe
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM2 shows 7pm 9pm
If you like listening to crackly old records, and wish you had been around to see Bessie Smith and Memphis Minnie back in the day, you don't want to miss Boston guitarist and chanteuse Erin Harpe. Her vocals and fingerpicking are at once authentic and totally unique, taking you on a trip to the 1930's delta. Erin's new CD, "Delta Blues Duets," is here!
In a genre that is often dominated by men, Erin Harpe is breaking new ground as a very accomplished female guitar player with a soulful voice and feel for the blues. Playing acoustic delta blues in the vein of Memphis Minnie and early Bonnie Raitt, Erin plays guitar and sings the blues like no other. Wherever she goes, Erin is winning over new audiences with her original and passionate take on the blues.
