Brazilian saxophonist and composer Michel Nirenberg begins his third U.S. tour with an appearance at 49 West Café on October 21 at 7:00 p.m. His program of Brazilian jazz and instrumental music reflects the fascinating history of Brazil and rich mix of cultures that enliven its music. Through the first week of December, world music lovers will have theopportunity to hear him play in Mid-Atlantic cities and towns, sharing memorable melodies and intriguing rhythms.
Nirenberg experienced many sellout shows and standing ovations on his last U.S. tour and was invited back to many venues such as 49 West. On this tour, he’ll also make his Blues Alley debut. Joining him are internationally known bassist Michael Pope and Washington, D.C. based drummer Julian Berkowitz, also blessed with Brazilian ancestry.
Besides the samba and bossa nova known to U.S. audiences, Nirenberg introduces many other Brazilian styles. He believes that after 60 years of bossa nova, there remains a wealth of diverse musical traditions yet to be explored by American audiences. Annapolis fans will enjoy tunes from his first high charting album, Retrato/Portrait, and be treated to new works planned for his next recording.
