Port City Pattern & Texture
A Visual Tour
Each Painting develops like a Port City from initial discovery to first settlement ultimately flowering into a mature form as natural limits and an equilibrium or sorts are reached. There is a parallel in the gradual taking away of the native attributes of the Painting’s paper/surface/ground to an occupation of the picture plane/earth’s surface by man_womankind with their resultant constructions & outfall. All shape the image of the city in balance with and many times destroying nature. See ecosystems altered with flows of water changed, forest and field plowed under while land is fenced in occupied with wildlife corridors shut down.
Please do read the show with the distinctly human skill of the map reader able to divine pattern and symbol into a coherent story of place as it has grown through time. There are many parallels to hisoric seaport of Annapolis in the show from the southeast facing harbor tothe oxblood red bottom paint & brick streets to the ever present blue serpentine flow of waves of water eroding and altering the shoreline decade in and decade out. Observe the piers, docks, bulkheads, inlets and vessels plying the bay for trade and transportation while city struggles. engages and conforms to the natural edge.
You will see many horizons and the personality of the day reflected upon the sea and sky with the city hovering in the distance. There are many forces operating at many different scales shaping the city from the natural to the celestial to the subatomic which operate independently from the machinations of human kind as our species, numbering on the billions, struggles to alter ecosystems and settle the biosphere of an ever smaller planet. Use your forensic abilities to discover the forces shaping the patterns and textures of the Port City as it evolves through time.
