However\, these programs won’t be successful without the engagement and support of the local community. Laura will talk about the two years she spent in the Philippines as a Peace Corps Volunteer\, working with community-based management programs ranging from installing artificial reef habitats\, aiding in recovery from a Super Typhoon\, and evaluating the effectiveness of management programs using perceptions of the local community. \nAbout the Speaker: I’m a marine ecologist studying the impacts of disturbances (such as hurricanes\, bleaching\, and disease) on coral reef ecosystems. From 2012-2014 I served in the US Peace Corps as a coastal resource management advisor\, while also conducting research for my master’s degree. I’m also an avid SCUBA diver and have conducted hundreds of dives for both scientific research and plain old fun. \nHope to see you next Thursday\, July 26th at 6:15pm at 49 West! \n  \nCheers! \nTracy Gill and Andy Loftus \n  \nPS – Below are some great events sent by Carl Benson\, of the Climate Stewards of Annapolis: \n  \nClimate Stewards\, \nPlease join your fellow Climate Stewards at the following events to learn more about climate change and how to come together to address the effects of climate change: \n\nZero Hour. SUMMARY:Shook/ Russo 5 Tet
DESCRIPTION:Amy Shook – acoustic bass\nPat Shook – tenor saxophone\nFrank Russo – drums\nTim Leahey – trumpet\nJonathan Epley – guitar \nThe Shook/Russo 5tet has been performing together since 2005 in the mid-Atlantic region. Their focus has always been to compose and perform their own original music within the jazz idiom\, honoring the masters by carrying on the tradition. Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band. \n
