SUMMARY:Theresa Sise & Sweet Tea
DESCRIPTION:Annapolis jazz vocalist Theresa Sise debuts at 49 West debut in with a show titled “Love in the Time of Tinder\,” celebrating the paradox of love in the 21st Century: despite countless ways to\nmeet someone\, it’s as challenging as ever to find true love. \nLaughter and catharsis can be anticipated from her program of beloved jazz standards and refreshing originals exploring the human condition. What do we know about dating and finding\nlove in modern times? It’s complicated\, but that is nothing new! \nProving the point is bluesy tune\, “If I Could Be with You\,” written by James P. Johnson and Henry Creamer in 1926. An upbeat version of Cole Porter’s 1943 classic\, “You’d Be So Nice to\nCome Home To” will echo a timeless sentiment. “Being Alive” from the Sondheim musical Company is written from the standpoint of a confirmed bachelor ready to take a leap of faith.\nGrowing up in a Navy legacy family\, Theresa Sise was born in Lisbon\, Portugal. She lived in Mauritius and Mozambique in Africa before moving to Annapolis at age seven. She prepared for a career in radio by studying at the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland\, graduating in 2008. She earned a BA in Media and Communication Studies\, graduating cum laude from UMBC in 2014. Still holding the microphone\, she now sets her words to music\, performing on stages in regional jazz venues. She is known for her inventive takes on the jazz standard. \nShe honed her jazz chops with teachers in Philadelphia\, New York and Baltimore\, including some of the best in the business: musicians Robert Redd\, Keter Betts\, Rusty Mason and Vince Evans. Recognizing her talent and musicality\, international vocalists Audrey Shakir (Wynton Marsalis) and Renee Georges (Ray Charles) invited Sise to join them in the vocal group\, ART in\nThree Chairs. After years performing with big bands and smaller ensembles\, Sise is developing a name in the region. Dickson Mercer of the News Post in Frederick describes her “lush voice\nthat sounds bred for jazz.
