On tour with Maureen McGovern\, Fidyk has performed with orchestras throughout the country\, including The Cincinnati Pops\, Spokane Symphony\, Nashville Symphony\, Plano Symphony\, The Baltimore Symphony\, The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra\, and the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. The band features acclaimed recording and performing artists bassist Max Murray\, saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk\, drummer Frank Russo and guitarist Donato Soveiro. \nAs a long time member of Afro Bop Alliance\, bassist Max Murray shared a Latin Grammy Award and a Grammy nomination for the 2008 album Caribbean Jazz Project with Dave Samuels. The Boston bred musician is a former U.S. Naval Academy Band member. \nSaxophonist Jeff Antoniuk has toured many continents since leaving Alberta\, Canada and is lauded for his heightened powers on the saxophone. DESCRIPTION:Starr’s Jazz Jam has been in existence at 49 West for over 10 years now and was before that very popular at the King of France Tavern. The house band plays amazing jazz for the first set\, led by John Starr on bass\, flute and vocals too. He is joined by Tom Korth on piano\, Bill McHenry on drums and Dick Glass on trumpet! The second and third sets include singers and players from the audience and we attract wonderful local singers and musicians. We have quite an array of instrumentalists who show up and call tunes. Aided by two formidable vocalists and solid rhythm section\, the pianist and composer will deliver his own special brand of jazz featuring plenty of harmony and groove shot with rhythm and blues! \nMarshall has performed in clubs and concert halls as far north as Toronto\, Canada and as far south as Rio De Janeiro\, Brazil. He has graced the stages of many celebrated venues in the nation’s capital including\, The Kennedy Center\, Wolf Trap and Blues Alley. Always the epitome of taste and artistry\, Marshall offers beloved standards to complement his own acclaimed compositions. His 2014 debut recording\, Arrival\, reached No. 25 on the CMJ jazz charts and received rave reviews from critics.\nVocal harmony enriches and enlivens Terry Marshall’s music. His recording and the Annapolis performance feature luscious vocal harmony in many selections. Singers Iva Ambush and Kendra Johnson skillfully bend many songs into unique and interesting shapes.\nListeners will hear selections such as Marshall’s composition “Teresa\,” a samba in ¾ time. (Samba is almost always written and played in 4/4.) The band will cover a related Brazilian song\, “Upside Down\,” written by the iconic composer Djavan. \nArranged by Terry Marshall\, “This Bitter Earth” is another enticing piece jazz lovers can anticipate.\nIt features the voice of Kendra Johnson and Marshall on piano. A classic jazz ballad\, it was made popular by Dinah Washington. The piece exemplifies the period in the late 50s through the 60s when singers like Dinah Washington and Etta James blurred the lines between Jazz and Rhythm and Blues. Kendra Johnson’s vocal performance on the 2014 album was exceptionally well received by critics and the 49 West audience will soon hear the reason why.

Their focus has always been to compose and perform their own original music within the jazz idiom\, honoring the masters by carrying on the tradition. Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band.

The band features acclaimed recording and performing artists bassist Max Murray\, saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk\, drummer Frank Russo and guitarist Donato Soveiro. \nAs a long time member of Afro Bop Alliance\, bassist Max Murray shared a Latin Grammy Award and a Grammy nomination for the 2008 album Caribbean Jazz Project with Dave Samuels. The Boston bred musician is a former U.S. Naval Academy Band member. \nSaxophonist Jeff Antoniuk has toured many continents since leaving Alberta\, Canada and is lauded for his heightened powers on the saxophone. Jazz Times praised his considerable chops while MusikReviews.com described his amazing saxophone playing. He is a recognized master of modern jazz\, hard bop and funk. \nDrummer Frank Russo enjoyed a long career with the U.S. Naval Academy Band\, and has since won critical praise for his work with many jazz greats. His recordings have gained recognition from Downbeat\, Jazz Times and Modern Drummer. He has performed at numerous jazz festivals in North America\, Asia\, and Europe. \nGuitarist Donato Soviero has appeared with numerous groups in the US\, Europe and the Caribbean. Like his bandmates\, he has performed at all the top Washington\, D.C. concert venues. Tom Cole\, host of WPFW’S G Strings said Donato’s beautiful phrasing and impressive improvising took me aback. He’s one of those real surprises.
