Aided by two formidable vocalists and solid rhythm section\, the pianist and composer will deliver his own special brand of jazz featuring plenty of harmony and groove shot with rhythm and blues! \nMarshall has performed in clubs and concert halls as far north as Toronto\, Canada and as far south as Rio De Janeiro\, Brazil. He has graced the stages of many celebrated venues in the nation’s capital including\, The Kennedy Center\, Wolf Trap and Blues Alley. Always the epitome of taste and artistry\, Marshall offers beloved standards to complement his own acclaimed compositions. His 2014 debut recording\, Arrival\, reached No. 25 on the CMJ jazz charts and received rave reviews from critics.\nVocal harmony enriches and enlivens Terry Marshall’s music. His recording and the Annapolis performance feature luscious vocal harmony in many selections. Singers Iva Ambush and Kendra Johnson skillfully bend many songs into unique and interesting shapes.\nListeners will hear selections such as Marshall’s composition “Teresa\,” a samba in ¾ time. (Samba is almost always written and played in 4/4.) The band will cover a related Brazilian song\, “Upside Down\,” written by the iconic composer Djavan. \nArranged by Terry Marshall\, “This Bitter Earth” is another enticing piece jazz lovers can anticipate.\nIt features the voice of Kendra Johnson and Marshall on piano. A classic jazz ballad\, it was made popular by Dinah Washington. The piece exemplifies the period in the late 50s through the 60s when singers like Dinah Washington and Etta James blurred the lines between Jazz and Rhythm and Blues. The band features acclaimed recording and performing artists bassist Max Murray\, saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk\, drummer Frank Russo and guitarist Donato Soveiro. \nAs a long time member of Afro Bop Alliance\, bassist Max Murray shared a Latin Grammy Award and a Grammy nomination for the 2008 album Caribbean Jazz Project with Dave Samuels. The Boston bred musician is a former U.S. Naval Academy Band member. \nSaxophonist Jeff Antoniuk has toured many continents since leaving Alberta\, Canada and is lauded for his heightened powers on the saxophone. Jazz Times praised his considerable chops while MusikReviews.com described his amazing saxophone playing. He is a recognized master of modern jazz\, hard bop and funk. \nDrummer Frank Russo enjoyed a long career with the U.S. Naval Academy Band\, and has since won critical praise for his work with many jazz greats. His recordings have gained recognition from Downbeat\, Jazz Times and Modern Drummer. He has performed at numerous jazz festivals in North America\, Asia\, and Europe. \nGuitarist Donato Soviero has appeared with numerous groups in the US\, Europe and the Caribbean. Like his bandmates\, he has performed at all the top Washington\, D.C. concert venues. Tom Cole\, host of WPFW’S G Strings said Donato’s beautiful phrasing and impressive improvising took me aback. The house band plays amazing jazz for the first set\, led by John Starr on bass\, flute and vocals too. He is joined by Tom Korth on piano\, Bill McHenry on drums and Dick Glass on trumpet! The second and third sets include singers and players from the audience and we attract wonderful local singers and musicians. We have quite an array of instrumentalists who show up and call tunes. The band features acclaimed recording and performing artists bassist Max Murray\, saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk\, drummer Frank Russo and guitarist Donato Soveiro. \nAs a long time member of Afro Bop Alliance\, bassist Max Murray shared a Latin Grammy Award and a Grammy nomination for the 2008 album Caribbean Jazz Project with Dave Samuels. The Boston bred musician is a former U.S. Naval Academy Band member. \nSaxophonist Jeff Antoniuk has toured many continents since leaving Alberta\, Canada and is lauded for his heightened powers on the saxophone. Jazz Times praised his considerable chops while MusikReviews.com described his amazing saxophone playing. He is a recognized master of modern jazz\, hard bop and funk. \nDrummer Frank Russo enjoyed a long career with the U.S. Naval Academy Band\, and has since won critical praise for his work with many jazz greats. His recordings have gained recognition from Downbeat\, Jazz Times and Modern Drummer. He has performed at numerous jazz festivals in North America\, Asia\, and Europe. \nGuitarist Donato Soviero has appeared with numerous groups in the US\, Europe and the Caribbean. Like his bandmates\, he has performed at all the top Washington\, D.C. concert venues. Tom Cole\, host of WPFW’S G Strings said Donato’s beautiful phrasing and impressive improvising took me aback. He’s one of those real surprises.

Call 410-626-9796. \n  \nSaxophone master and composer Michel Nirenberg returns to the U.S. for his 2016 fall tour. In October and November\, he’ll share the vibrant melodies and rhythms of his native Brazil with jazz and world music fans in the Mid-Atlantic. On Sunday\, November 20\, he’ll make his Annapolis debut with pianist Tim Murphy in the Sunday Supper and Jazz series presented by Elana Byrd at 49 West Café from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. \nIn recent months\, Nirenberg has been making music in his hometown\, Rio de Janeiro\, collaborating with friends and performing tunes from his 2015 debut album\, Retrato/Portrait. First released in the U.S.\, the recording was well received. It soared on the American CMJ radio charts peaking at No. 6. Dan Bilawski of All About Jazz wrote\, “In terms of style\, substance\, and execution\, Nirenberg ranks high. This is some brilliant Brazilian jazz.” Raul da Gama of Latin Jazz Network called Nirenberg\, “a player who uses virtuosity not for self-aggrandizement but to glorify the music.” \nNirenberg first came to the U.S. to attend graduate school.  After earning many awards and an undergraduate degree in Brazil\, he earned a master’s degree in classical performance from James Madison University in Virginia. Before returning to Brazil he released his first album and joined the roster of Jazz Beyond Borders artists. \nIn these U.S. appearances and a subsequent tour of Israel\, Nirenberg will begin sharing some tunes slated for his next recording. In Annapolis\, he’ll be backed by several international performers including Brazilian seven-string bassist Leonardo Lucini\, American pianist Tim Murphy and English drummer Geoff Easthope. \nListeners will hear selections from the album and exciting new compositions and arrangements meant to introduce American music fans to a wider range of Brazilian jazz and instrumental music styles. Nirenberg’s composition “Faith\,” mixes baião\, partido alto and maracatu rhythms. Another recent and deeply spiritual composition\, “Bahia de Todos os Santos” is an Ijexá\, a rhythm from the state of Bahia in the northeast of Brazil. Bahia’s capital\, Salvador\, was built around Todos os Santos (All Saint’s Bay) and was a major port in the slave trade. Nirenberg introduces and ends the piece with a traditional capoeira chant and percussion solo. \nNirenberg will also cover “Espinha de Bacalhau\,” one of Brazil’s most popular and recognizable choros\, written by the great Severino Araújo in 1937. The title\, which means “a fish spine\,” refers to it’s up tempo speed and technical difficulty. Fortunately\, his team of international musicians is clearly up to the task!
