Their focus has always been to compose and perform their own original music within the jazz idiom\, honoring the masters by carrying on the tradition. Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band.

The band features acclaimed recording and performing artists bassist Max Murray\, saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk\, drummer Frank Russo and guitarist Donato Soveiro. \nAs a long time member of Afro Bop Alliance\, bassist Max Murray shared a Latin Grammy Award and a Grammy nomination for the 2008 album Caribbean Jazz Project with Dave Samuels. The Boston bred musician is a former U.S. Naval Academy Band member. \nSaxophonist Jeff Antoniuk has toured many continents since leaving Alberta\, Canada and is lauded for his heightened powers on the saxophone. Jazz Times praised his considerable chops while MusikReviews.com described his amazing saxophone playing. He is a recognized master of modern jazz\, hard bop and funk. \nDrummer Frank Russo enjoyed a long career with the U.S. Naval Academy Band\, and has since won critical praise for his work with many jazz greats. His recordings have gained recognition from Downbeat\, Jazz Times and Modern Drummer. He has performed at numerous jazz festivals in North America\, Asia\, and Europe. \nGuitarist Donato Soviero has appeared with numerous groups in the US\, Europe and the Caribbean. Like his bandmates\, he has performed at all the top Washington\, D.C. concert venues. Tom Cole\, host of WPFW’S G Strings said Donato’s beautiful phrasing and impressive improvising took me aback. Call 410-626-9796. \n  \nSaxophone master and composer Michel Nirenberg returns to the U.S. for his 2016 fall tour. In October and November\, he’ll share the vibrant melodies and rhythms of his native Brazil with jazz and world music fans in the Mid-Atlantic. On Sunday\, November 20\, he’ll make his Annapolis debut with pianist Tim Murphy in the Sunday Supper and Jazz series presented by Elana Byrd at 49 West Café from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. \nIn recent months\, Nirenberg has been making music in his hometown\, Rio de Janeiro\, collaborating with friends and performing tunes from his 2015 debut album\, Retrato/Portrait. First released in the U.S.\, the recording was well received. It soared on the American CMJ radio charts peaking at No. 6. Dan Bilawski of All About Jazz wrote\, “In terms of style\, substance\, and execution\, Nirenberg ranks high. This is some brilliant Brazilian jazz.” Raul da Gama of Latin Jazz Network called Nirenberg\, “a player who uses virtuosity not for self-aggrandizement but to glorify the music.” \nNirenberg first came to the U.S. to attend graduate school.  After earning many awards and an undergraduate degree in Brazil\, he earned a master’s degree in classical performance from James Madison University in Virginia. Before returning to Brazil he released his first album and joined the roster of Jazz Beyond Borders artists. \nIn these U.S. appearances and a subsequent tour of Israel\, Nirenberg will begin sharing some tunes slated for his next recording. In Annapolis\, he’ll be backed by several international performers including Brazilian seven-string bassist Leonardo Lucini\, American pianist Tim Murphy and English drummer Geoff Easthope. \nListeners will hear selections from the album and exciting new compositions and arrangements meant to introduce American music fans to a wider range of Brazilian jazz and instrumental music styles. Nirenberg’s composition “Faith\,” mixes baião\, partido alto and maracatu rhythms. Another recent and deeply spiritual composition\, “Bahia de Todos os Santos” is an Ijexá\, a rhythm from the state of Bahia in the northeast of Brazil. Bahia’s capital\, Salvador\, was built around Todos os Santos (All Saint’s Bay) and was a major port in the slave trade. Nirenberg introduces and ends the piece with a traditional capoeira chant and percussion solo. \nNirenberg will also cover “Espinha de Bacalhau\,” one of Brazil’s most popular and recognizable choros\, written by the great Severino Araújo in 1937. The title\, which means “a fish spine\,” refers to it’s up tempo speed and technical difficulty. Fortunately\, his team of international musicians is clearly up to the task! Their focus has always been to compose and perform their own original music within the jazz idiom\, honoring the masters by carrying on the tradition. Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band.

They move effortlessly from the classic jazz of Horace Silver and Herbie Hancock to the pop hits of Gino Vannelli\, Peter Gabriel and Led Zeppelin. Get ready for energy\, humor and groove. The band features acclaimed recording and performing artists bassist Max Murray\, saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk\, drummer Frank Russo and guitarist Donato Soveiro. \nAs a long time member of Afro Bop Alliance\, bassist Max Murray shared a Latin Grammy Award and a Grammy nomination for the 2008 album Caribbean Jazz Project with Dave Samuels. The Boston bred musician is a former U.S. Naval Academy Band member. \nSaxophonist Jeff Antoniuk has toured many continents since leaving Alberta\, Canada and is lauded for his heightened powers on the saxophone. Jazz Times praised his considerable chops while MusikReviews.com described his amazing saxophone playing. He is a recognized master of modern jazz\, hard bop and funk. \nDrummer Frank Russo enjoyed a long career with the U.S. Naval Academy Band\, and has since won critical praise for his work with many jazz greats. His recordings have gained recognition from Downbeat\, Jazz Times and Modern Drummer. He has performed at numerous jazz festivals in North America\, Asia\, and Europe. \nGuitarist Donato Soviero has appeared with numerous groups in the US\, Europe and the Caribbean. Like his bandmates\, he has performed at all the top Washington\, D.C. concert venues. Tom Cole\, host of WPFW’S G Strings said Donato’s beautiful phrasing and impressive improvising took me aback. He’s one of those real surprises.

The house band plays amazing jazz for the first set\, led by John Starr on bass\, flute and vocals too. He is joined by Tom Korth on piano\, Bill McHenry on drums and Dick Glass on trumpet! The second and third sets include singers and players from the audience and we attract wonderful local singers and musicians. We have quite an array of instrumentalists who show up and call tunes. SUMMARY:Fred Hughes Trio
DESCRIPTION:Fred Hughes has performed\, conducted and presented workshops nationally and internationally for over three decades. His early training includes keyboards and low brass in community bands and jazz ensembles across his home state of Pennsylvania. By age 25\, Fred had long been recognized as an up and coming conductor and world class jazz pianist for his work with the First Army Band\, Fort Meade\, Maryland and the Eighth Army Band in Seoul\, Korea. \nAn avid educator\, Fred has taught at the middle and high school levels and was Assistant Director of Jazz Studies at Shepherd College. He has presented workshops and clinics at conferences for the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE)\, Music Educators National Conference (MENC)\, Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA)\, Texas Bandmasters Association (TBA) and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. His book\, The Jazz Pianist: Left Hand Voicings and Chord Theory is published by Alfred Publications. Hughes has performed with the Baltimore and Chicago Symphony Orchestras as well as jazz greats Claudio Roditi\, Al Cohn\, Arturo Sandoval\, Roy Hargrove\, Bill Watrous\, and Toots Thielemans. As a conductor\, he has directed the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra\, the Atlanta and Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestras\, Washington and Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestras\, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and was musical director for the Three Mo Tenors.
