SUMMARY:Steve Fidyk & the Parlour project
DESCRIPTION:Known for his touch\, versatility and musical approach\, jazz drummer Steve Fidyk has earned national and in-\nternational acclaim as an artist\, author and columnist. With his second album as a bandleader\, aptly titled Allied\nForces (2016)\, Fidyk has gathered together a powerful lineup and has succeeded in pushing his hard hitting melodic\nmessage to the front lines. The musicians on the date include the amazing frontline contributions of tenor saxophon-\nist Doug Webb and alto saxophonist Joseph Henson\, alongside the crack rhythm section of guitarist Shawn Purcell\,\nand organist extraordinaire Brian Charette.\nFidyk’s father John Fidyk\, who played tenor saxophone with groups throughout North Eastern Pennsylvania\, began\ntaking him on gigs as a substitute drummer at the age of eight. Encouraged by his parents\, Fidyk pursued music\nthroughout high school\, and majored in music education at Wilkes University. He played drums in the big band under\nthe direction of Bob Wilbur and eventually Tom Heinze. It was at this time that he began to immerse himself in jazz\,\nlistening to the great big bands of Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Woody Herman\, Stan Kenton\, and Buddy Rich. Rich\nwas the first jazz drummer Fidyk saw perform live when he was eight years old\, and that experience left a lasting\nimpression.\nIn 1987\, after hearing Fidyk play with the Mansfield State College big band\, legendary jazz drummer Joe Morello\naccepted him as a student. Morello was instrumental in helping Steve with his technique\, sound production\,\ncoordination\, and overall approach to playing the instrument. Morello was also very influential in helping Fidyk develop his articulate teaching skills\, and he has been dedicated and committed to education ever since. Fidyk currently serves\non the jazz studies faculty at Temple University in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania and as a consultant for Jazz at\nLincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Program. He has also authored several drum method books and DVD’s for Mel\nBay and Alfred Publications. As a columnist\, Fidyk contributes regularly to Modern Drummer Magazine\, and\nTeaching Music Magazine.\nFidyk has appeared on over 100 recordings and his discography as a co-leader includes Big Kids with John DeSalme\n(U.S. Roots)\, and two records with The Taylor/Fidyk Big Band: A Perfect Match (Write Groove\, 2003) and Live at\nBlues Alley (OA2\, 2006). His debut as a bandleader was Heads Up! (Posi-Tone\, 2014) which featured Terell Stafford\nand Tim Warfield.\nFidyk has performed with Wayne Bergeron\, John Clayton\, Mark Taylor\, Wycliffe Gordon\, Tim Hagans\, Slide Hampton\,\nMaureen McGovern\, New York Voices\, Dick Oates\, Arturo Sandoval\, and Doc Severinsen. With Maureen McGovern\,\nhe has accompanied symphony orchestras throughout the country including The Cincinnati Pops\, Spokane Symphony\, Nashville Symphony\, Plano Symphony\, The Baltimore Symphony\, The Buffalo Philharmonic\, The Richmond Symphony\,\nand the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon Big Band. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE CALL 410-626-9796 TO MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS! \nUptown Vocal Jazz Quartet: Ginny Carr\, Robert McBride\, Holly Shockey\, Andre Enceneat \nBacked by:\nFrank Russo (drums)\, Max Murray (bass)\, Alan Blackman (piano) \nThe Press has declared Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet (UVJQ): ”as versatile and entertaining as any vocal group you will hear”… “electrifying”…“pure fun”…“sensational” … “exceptional”…“old school moving to new cool.” Reviewers\, broadcasters\, and listeners worldwide have praised them as a standout for their creative originality and superb musicality. Reminiscent of the Manhattan Transfer with their tight harmonies and vocal sass\, Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet has put their distinctive signature on the group vocal style that mixes great fun with great art and built a loyal audience across five continents. They have been highly celebrated for their dazzling vocal arrangements and award-winning original songs that put an exciting new spin on the Great American jazz book. Legendary jazz saxophonist Richie Cole\, whose solo sax has been featured on The Manhattan Transfer’s Grammy-winning albums\, declared UVJQ “My new discovery\, the whole package.” Cole invited UVJQ’s chief arranger/songwriter Ginny Carr to co-write an album for the group to record with him\, and the result\, “Vocal Madness\,” has put UVJQ in the world spotlight and garnered praise as one of Richie Cole’s finest recordings. UVJQ’s critically acclaimed CDs have made the Billboard Top 25 Jazz Albums Chart and been featured on SiriusXM Satellite Radio’s Jazz Channel and been on the JazzWeek Top 50 Radio Chart for multiple weeks. The group has been interviewed twice on NPR\, performed on the headliner stages of major international jazz festivals in the US and abroad\, sung as guest artists with France’s Cote Ouest Big Band\, the US Army Blues jazz ensemble\, multiple symphony orchestras\, and more. They have opened concerts for such jazz legends as the Four Freshmen\, Ahmad Jamal\, and Charlie Byrd\, and they appear as a featured artist on “Behind The Mic\,” an internationally popular site featuring video interviews with the world’s most renowned innovators of vocal jazz. Ms. Carr was selected as a finalist for the first annual Bernard/Ebb Songwriting Competition in 2015 and her original songs\, written for and performed by UVJQ\, have been featured on Maryland Public Television. The “Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet Series” is a spotlighted entry in the esteemed “Sound Music Publications” catalog\, and the group’s creative compositions and arrangements have been performed and recorded by vocal jazz ensembles worldwide. \nLearn more:\nwww.uptownvocaljazzquartet.com

SUMMARY:The Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Please call 410-626-9796 to make your reservations to ensure your seat! \nThe Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra makes its debut in Annapolis at 49 West performing music from its recent album Blues for Tahrir\, a recent pick for one of the top 40 albums of 2015 by Jazz Times magazine. \nTodd Marcus – bass clarinet\nGreg Tardy – tenor sax\nRussell Kirk – alto sax\nBrent Birckhead – flute & alto sax\nAlex Norris – trumpet\nDarius Jones – trombone\nBruce Barth – piano\nJeff Reed – bass\nEric Kennedy – drums\nIrene Jalenti – vocals…\nNora Howell – visual art \n“Marcus…is clearly what the jazz polls call a “rising star” – as a composer-arranger and as a bass clarinetist. In Marcus’ hands\, the bass clarinet is no longer a specialty instrument. Its unique timbral richness becomes incisive\, fully capable of forceful expression.”\n— JazzTimes\, August 2015 \n“Listeners won’t have any trouble recognizing Marcus’s compelling gifts for composing and arranging.”\n— The Washington Post\, May 2015 \n“Todd Marcus is not only one of the great individualists in jazz\, he’s also a great composer. There’ve been some amazing big band jazz albums issued in the past few years\, but none as good as this since Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society released their withering anti-gentrification broadside Brooklyn Babylon in 2012. As happened with that album\, time may judge Blues for Tahrir to be a classic.”\n— New York Music Daily\, May 2015 \n“Baltimore-based Todd Marcus\, the virtuoso bass clarinetist and composer\, is a master of straight-ahead jazz.”\n—Baltimore Sun\, January 2014 \nVoted a Rising Star in the 2015\, 2014 & 2013 Annual Critics Poll for “clarinet” and “miscellaneous instrument” categories.\n— Downbeat magazine
