Thursday\, January 30\, 2025\, 6:00-7:15pm ET \nTitle of Talk: Coral Reefs in a Changing Climate \nSpeaker: Ms. Jennifer Koss\, Director\, NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program \nAbout the Talk: Occupying less than 0.1% of the ocean floor\, coral reefs punch well above their weight in terms of the ecosystems services they convey to the estimated one billion people who depend on them for food\, livelihoods and coastal protection\, and the billions more who rely on them for recreation\, tourism\, sources of medicine\, and for their cultural and spiritual values. Coral support over 25% of marine life are the proverbial canaries in the climate change coal mine. Conservation of coral reefs is a complex and challenging effort that is becoming increasingly more difficult as the impacts of climate change to the world’s oceans are a direct threat to the health of coral reefs in the U.S. and around the world. It’s never been more important than now to do what can to restore and recover these fragile but vital ecosystems. \nAbout the Speaker: Jennifer Koss is Director of the Coral Reef Conservation Program in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Coral Program supports effective management and sound science to preserve\, sustain and restore valuable coral reef ecosystems for future generations. With an academic background in oceanography\, biology and marine policy\, Jennifer has worked on coastal/marine habitat restoration and conservation issues at EPA’s Chesapeake Bay Program Office\, NOAA’s Restoration Center\, the Program Coordination Office of the NOAA Administrator and currently NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program. Jennifer was also a legislative fellow serving two years in Senator Daniel K Inouye’s (D-HI) Office. She is on the Advisory Board for the Global Fund for Coral Reefs; is the Vice-Chair of the Coral R&D Accelerator Program which is an initiative of the G-20\, and has just concluded three years as the co-chair of the International Coral Reef Initiative.\nCorals and beaches of Ofu\, American Samoa. SUMMARY:Cafe Scientifique
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \nCafe Scientifique returns to 49 West in January 2017! Cafe Scientifique happens the last Thursday of every month 6pm-7:30pm. Please make sure you call 410-626-9796 to make your reservations because space is very limited! Any science lecture questions\, please email Tracy Gill at annapoliscafesci@gmail.com. \n  \nThe Climate Apocalypse \n  \nRapidly growing human population accompanied by a rapid increase in the use of fossil fuels is straining the resources of our planet and may lead to our extinction.  This presentation illustrates the problems we face and the results we will reap with and without a change in the way we generate our energy and use our resources. Unless we address our careless behavior and plan a course to deal with the impact on Earth we will lose everything. By designing proactive programs to deal with these challenges\, we can alter the future in a positive way. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: St. John (Sinjin) Martin graduated from the University of Maryland in 1965 with a degree in electrical engineering.  He then worked for Honeywell and several other area companies as well as NSA.  After retiring\, he spent several years studying climate change causes and effects before joining Arctic Energies\, an alternate energy company that pursued ammonia-based systems.  It was that association that spurred interest in designing systems using solar\, wind\, geothermal and ocean energy to produce electricity and vehicle fuels.

Since 1975 he has maintained a continuing study of Black Guillemots on Cooper Island\, Alaska\, in the western Beaufort Sea. The study is one of the longest longitudinal bird studies in the Arctic and its findings on the consequences of decadal-scale reductions in snow and sea ice provide some of the best examples of the biological consequences of climate change. See link about his work here: e’s watching the world melt\nAbout the Speaker: George Divoky began his studies of seabirds in the summer of 1969 when\, as part of a Canadian Wildlife Service program\, he conducted shipboard observations off Newfoundland on Bedford Institute of Oceanography research vessels. That experience led to him becoming a Research Associate at the Smithsonian Institution in 1970 where he was selected to participate in the U.S. Coast Guard’s initial surveys of the Beaufort Sea adjacent to the newly-discovered Prudhoe Bay oil fields. Since then he has studied Alaskan seabirds annually\, working on a diverse group of conservation issues including the Alaska Native Land Claims Settlement Act\, oil and gas exploration of the outer continental shelf\, the Exxon Valdez oil spill\, and regional climate change. In 1975 he began a study of Black Guillemots\, a diving arctic seabird\, on Cooper Island\, Alaska\, 35 km east of Point Barrow\, Alaska\, that he still maintains. The four-decade study is one of the few long-term seabird studies in the Arctic and its findings on the consequences of recent snow and sea ice reductions provided some of the first examples of the biological consequences of climate change. \nDr. Divoky’s research was featured in a cover story in the New York Times Magazine entitled “George Divoky’s Planet\,” in the PBS’s Scientific American Frontiers program “Hot Times in Alaska” with Alan Alda\, and on ABC Nightly News and Nightline. He has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman\, and has been interviewed on NPR’s Talk of the Nation. His research and experiences on Cooper Island were featured in a play about climate change\, Greenland\, staged by the Royal National Theatre in London in 2011. “Polar Sea”\, a 10-hour documentary addressing changes in the Northwest Passage featured his work in the episode examining climate change in Alaska. The documentary aired in Canada\, France and Germany in December 2014 and is available online in those countries. U.S. distribution is anticipated in the near future. \nDivoky was born and raised in Cleveland\, Ohio\, has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Michigan State University and a doctorate from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. When not in the field on Cooper Island from June through early September each year\, he lives in Seattle\, Washington. More information is available at the Friends of Cooper Island website – cooperisland.org

Usually the last Thursday of the month\, from January -October (take a break in November and December.) \nJune 30 Café: Are we non-experts irrational when we refuse to accept science-based advice? \nSpeaker: Dr. Lawrence Lengbeyer\, Associate Professor of Philosophy\, Department of Leadership\, Ethics and Law\, United States Naval Academy \nWhen: Thursday\, June 30\, 2016\, 6:30 – 7:30pm\nCome at 5:30 or 6 to order food and drinks before the cafe begins! \nWhere: 49 West Coffeehouse\, Wine Bar and Gallery\, 49 West St.\, Annapolis\, MD 21401 \nQuestions? If you are unable to keep your reservation\, please call to release your seats to the wait list. \nSummary: Scientists and their supporters often portray laypersons who refuse to go along with science-based recommendations\, like those of public health authorities or doctors\, as exasperatingly irrational. I argue that a good deal of non-deference to such expert recommendations can be defended as rational. A given recommendation might be subject to intelligent lay critical questioning on any of 4 grounds: (1) for incorporating a weighting of non-scientific values that the layperson finds objectionable; (2) for depending upon weak non-scientific reasoning; (3) for overgeneralizing in its recommendation or its understanding of the underlying scientific research; (4) for deriving from science of dubious quality. Such challenges can justify a lay questioner in modifying or disregarding a science-based recommendation.\nAbout the Speaker: Larry Lengbeyer\, Ph.D.\, is an Associate Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Leadership\, Ethics\, and Law at the United States Naval Academy. He feels grateful for such an enjoyable job; for how incredibly difficult it is to do flawless reasoning (which makes his skills valuable); and for the good fortune to have spent 16 years of his life studying at great universities: Harvard (applied math)\, Cambridge (social psychology & social/political theory)\, Yale (law\, & hermeneutics)\, and Stanford (philosophy). His intellectual interests are eclectic\, though with some focus on ethical issues informed by the philosophy of mind. He and his wife Audrey are passing along their love of music-making to their four young unschooled daughters. July 28th Café: Native Orchids – Ecologically Interesting and in Need of Our Help!
