DESCRIPTION:B’s Bees Jazz Quartet \nPresented by Elana Byrd’s Intimate Jazz Series\n\n\nCanadian jazz group B’s Bees is a hard swinging jazz outfit known for writing compelling original music and playing high energy sets. Based in Montreal\, they are the city’s busiest gigging group playing major clubs and festivals. The group tours the U.S. and Canada for the second time in May 2018 and they are among the artists featured on the Jazz Beyond Borders roster. \nRon Netsky of Rochester City News writes\, “If the sound of Montreal jazz group B’s Bees reminds you of Art Blakey‘s Jazz Messengers\, it might be because of the similar spirit.” Lawrence Stahlberg of WERU-FM’s “Jazz Straight Ahead” says the band\, “forges ahead with strong writing and accomplished arrangements.” Chris Spector of Midwest Record writes\, “Hot stuff for those looking for a wild ride.” Great reviews are rolling in praising both of the band’s new albums. \nEarly this year\, the group released Dear Charlie\, featuring the music of the late great Charlie Haden. On April 20 they released  Kanata featuring original jazz. The latter disc was shaped with input from trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis\, who is among several guest artists on the tour. The album explores the founding of Canada and milestones in the nation’s history that are shaping the country’s culture. This is a fascinating time to consider the similarities and differences we have with our northern neighbor while hearing one of Montreal’s hottest jazz bands! SUMMARY:The Asher Herzog Band
DESCRIPTION:Asher Herzog is an emerging drummer\, composer\, and improviser currently based in the Baltimore area. While he has studied with many through his young career\, his biggest teacher has been the city of Baltimore itself. Influenced in high school by the community of improvisers in the immediate area\, he developed a keen interest in the intersection of composed and improvised music. \nThis interest was nurtured during his time at Towson University\, of which he is a recent graduate. In addition to freelancing around the greater Baltimore/D.C area\, Herzog is involved with many ongoing projects such as Yugennui (Post/Math Rock)\, Fuss (Improvising Power-Quartet)\, Liberata (Jazz/Folk)\, and his sextet\, Bowhunter. \nDerek Wiegmann is an up and coming bassist living and working in Baltimore\, MD. He graduated from Towson University with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz/Commercial Performance in Spring 2017. Through the jazz residency program\, he performed with artists such as Drew Gress\, Jeff Lederer\, Ralph Alessi\, Ellery Eskelin\, Tony Malaby Donny McCaslin\, and Mary Halvorson. In addition to his freelance work\, Derek performs with local bands such as the Tom Lagana Trio\, Derrick Michaels Chamber Quartet\, Bachelor Boys Band\, Screaming Art Large Ensemble\, Ephemera Quartet\, Liberata and more. \nTim Houston is a guitarist currently residing in Baltimore\, MD. He graduated from Towson University with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz/Commercial Performance in Fall 2018. Through the jazz residency program\, he performed with artists such as Tim Berne\, Drew Gress\, Kris Davis\, and Ellery Eskelin. Tim performs with jazz\, rock\, and experimental groups such as Fuss\, Yugennui\, Headrest\, Jouska\, and Blake Ruby and the Homies \nChris Young is a woodwind player residing in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area. He received his B.M. and M.A. in Jazz/Commercial Saxophone Performance from Towson University\, where he studied under Jason Rigby\, Dave Ballou\, Frank Russo\, Jim McFalls\, Darryl Brenzel and Sara Nichols. Chris has performed along side internationally recognized musicians such as Matt Wilson\, Ellery Eskelin\, Mary Halvorson\, Drew Gress\, Carl Filipiak\, and Levi Stephens. Aside from his freelance work\, Chris performs locally with groups such as Telepathic Dog\, Screaming Art Large Ensemble\, Bachelor Boys Band\, Stimulus Package and leads various groups under his own name. \n  \n
