Their focus has always been to compose and perform their own original music within the jazz idiom\, honoring the masters by carrying on the tradition. Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band. \n

DESCRIPTION:  \n \nCOME JOIN US FOR HAPPY HOUR 5-7PM!! \nBob Israel guitar\nEddie Czerwinski guitar\nColeman O’Donoghue percussion\nDave Marsh bass. \n  \nBob originally made his mark as the founder\, orchestra leader and principal trombonist of the Washington Jazz Battalion\, a 16-piece Big Band\, formed in 1976. The band enjoyed popularity and perform ed overseas\, in NYC\, and throughout most of the east coast. Bob’s Big Band enjoyed great popularity on the East Coast\, playing venues like: Top of the Town; Cellar Door; Blues Alley; Wax Museum; Bethesda Blues and Jazz; Bethesda Cinema Drafthouse; Arties after Dark\, among many corporate\, charity\, and association events. Bob’s skills and the unique sound his Big Band was noted by the Ronald Reagan\, George Bush\, and Bill ClintonAdministrations\, where he was formally invited to perform at their Presidential Inaugurations Balls. As a musician Bob Israel has performed in concert with Nancy Wilson\, Stanley Turrentine\, Harry Connick\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Mary Wilson and Steve Allen. In addition to performing at Inaugural Balls he has performed for many corporate and associate events as an orchestra leader. The Washington Jazz Battalion Big Band was one of Washington’s finest and attracted crowds of over a thousand people a night. Please reserve your seats by calling 410-626-9796\, & if you reserve seats and do not plan to come\, please release your seats. \n  \nDear Annapolis Cafe Scientifique Patrons\, \n  \nPlease join us next Thursday\, August 29\, at 6:15pmfor the following presentation: \n  \nSpeaker: Dr. Jeremy Werdell\, Oceanographer in the Ocean Ecology Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC)\, where he also serves as the Project Scientist for the upcoming Plankton\, Aerosol\, Cloud\, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission. \n  \nAbstract: Yes indeed\, satellites flying 450 miles above us can be used to explore the microscopic ocean. “Observing the microscopic living (and non-living) ocean from space” will provide an overview of the field of satellite ocean color.  The contents of the upper ocean shape the distribution of the marine light field and give the ocean its color.  By measuring the spectral distribution of light leaving the ocean (that is\, its “ocean color”)\, satellite radiometers can be used to infer the contents of the water column\, including information useful for fisheries and watershed management and water quality monitoring. This presentation will review how ocean color works\, why everyone should care about phytoplankton\, and the current state-of-the-art in satellite ocean color – including a peek at NASA’s next great Earth observing mission\, PACE.  It will also demystify the acquisition\, use\, and analysis of satellite ocean color data products. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Jeremy Werdell is an Oceanographer in the Ocean Ecology Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC)\, where he also serves as the Project Scientist for the upcoming Plankton\, Aerosol\, Cloud\, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission. Jeremy resolved to become a marine scientist in 1988 upon his return from an eighth grade science trip to the Bermuda Biological Station for Research. After a quick stint in high school\, he received his B.A. in Biology and in Environmental Science from the University of Virginia in 1996 and his M.S. in Oceanography from the University of Connecticut in 1998.  Jeremy joined GSFC in 1999\, where he has remained ever since\, as all oceanographers with a penchant for motion sickness should. When the stars properly aligned in 2014\, Jeremy received his Ph.D. from the University of Maine. His primary interest focuses on improving our understanding of the ocean’s biological responses to Earth’s changing climate – namely\, how the spatial distributions of phytoplankton communities evolve over time. If one cares about breathing and eating and aquatic recreation\, then one cares about phytoplankton. Given that Jeremy wears a NASA badge\, his mandatory secondary interests extend to the more challenging aspects of satellite remote sensing\, including the on-orbit calibration of ocean color instruments\, the development of remote-sensing algorithms\, and the validation of satellite-derived data products. These\, in combination with his subject matter living in a three-dimensional fluid on a rotating ellipsoid\, create a research environment packed with opportunities to contribute to NASA’s pursuit of better understanding our home planet. When not traveling with his family and obsessing about his yard\, Jeremy also moonlights as a teacher and student mentor. If he had to do it all again\, he would pursue his real dream of becoming a professional chef.

In an industry where artists are often working independently\, “The 9” brings performers together\, often whom have never met\, to combine their talents and perform to large crowds around the country.
