SUMMARY:Cafe Scientifique
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE CALL 410-626-9796 TO MAKE RESERVATIONS BECAUSE IT FILLS UP QUICKLY! \nThe Annapolis Cafe Scientifique\, where science is always on the menu\, meets on the last Thursday of each month\, (except November and December)\, at 6:30 PM\, at the 49 West Coffeehouse\, Wine Bar and Gallery. Location information and directions to the 49 West Coffeehouse can be found at: www.49westcoffeehouse.com. Good food and drink are also on the menu! \n  \nTitle: Forty Years of Change: A Seabird Responds to a Melting Arctic \nPresenter: George Divoky\, Arctic Seabird Ornithologist\, PhD\, Arctic Biologist\, founder of Friends of Cooper Island \nAbstract: George Divoky has studied seabirds in arctic Alaska since 1970 and has participated in studies and assessments related to oil and gas development and regional climate change. Since 1975 he has maintained a continuing study of Black Guillemots on Cooper Island\, Alaska\, in the western Beaufort Sea. The study is one of the longest longitudinal bird studies in the Arctic and its findings on the consequences of decadal-scale reductions in snow and sea ice provide some of the best examples of the biological consequences of climate change. See link about his work here: e’s watching the world melt\nAbout the Speaker: George Divoky began his studies of seabirds in the summer of 1969 when\, as part of a Canadian Wildlife Service program\, he conducted shipboard observations off Newfoundland on Bedford Institute of Oceanography research vessels. That experience led to him becoming a Research Associate at the Smithsonian Institution in 1970 where he was selected to participate in the U.S. Coast Guard’s initial surveys of the Beaufort Sea adjacent to the newly-discovered Prudhoe Bay oil fields. Since then he has studied Alaskan seabirds annually\, working on a diverse group of conservation issues including the Alaska Native Land Claims Settlement Act\, oil and gas exploration of the outer continental shelf\, the Exxon Valdez oil spill\, and regional climate change. In 1975 he began a study of Black Guillemots\, a diving arctic seabird\, on Cooper Island\, Alaska\, 35 km east of Point Barrow\, Alaska\, that he still maintains. The four-decade study is one of the few long-term seabird studies in the Arctic and its findings on the consequences of recent snow and sea ice reductions provided some of the first examples of the biological consequences of climate change. \nDr. Divoky’s research was featured in a cover story in the New York Times Magazine entitled “George Divoky’s Planet\,” in the PBS’s Scientific American Frontiers program “Hot Times in Alaska” with Alan Alda\, and on ABC Nightly News and Nightline. He has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman\, and has been interviewed on NPR’s Talk of the Nation. His research and experiences on Cooper Island were featured in a play about climate change\, Greenland\, staged by the Royal National Theatre in London in 2011. “Polar Sea”\, a 10-hour documentary addressing changes in the Northwest Passage featured his work in the episode examining climate change in Alaska. The documentary aired in Canada\, France and Germany in December 2014 and is available online in those countries. U.S. distribution is anticipated in the near future. \nDivoky was born and raised in Cleveland\, Ohio\, has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Michigan State University and a doctorate from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. When not in the field on Cooper Island from June through early September each year\, he lives in Seattle\, Washington. More information is available at the Friends of Cooper Island website – cooperisland.org

SUMMARY:Annapolis Bluegrass Coalition
DESCRIPTION:Roger Green\nBand leader\, Guitar and Lead/Harmony Vocals.  Major bluegrass influences: Reno & Smiley\, Flatt & Scruggs\, Jim & Jesse\, Country Gentlemen. \nBorn in Washington DC\, grew up in Silver Spring\, Maryland.  Roger started playing guitar and bluegrass at age 10.  In his early teens and through high school\, he played banjo and formed his first bluegrass band\, The Mink Hollow Boys with high school buddies.  Shortly after\, Roger began playing mandolin and for a short time performed with Emerson & Waldron.  During a tour of duty in the Air Force\, Roger picked with Mac & Hazel McGee who later went on to form the popular New England band\,  White Mountain Bluegrass.  After being transferred Roger worked with a Montgomery\, Alabama band called the Wry Grass Medicine Show.  Following military service\,  Roger then picked with local Washington DC bands\, Leon Morris & Associates\, Destination Bluegrass\, None of The Above and Ritchie Reunion.  In the early 1990’s Roger switched back to guitar and formed a new group with Tom Gray & Fred Travers called the Gray\, Green & Travers Trio.  After Fred left to join the Seldom Scene\, Roger started working with pickup musicians under the name of Roger & The Real Good Pickers until finally starting the Annapolis Bluegrass Coalition.  With Annapolis Bluegrass\,  Roger sings lead and harmony vocals and writes most of the bands original material. \n\n\n\nDan Kimball\nMandolin and Tenor/Lead Vocals.  Major bluegrass influences:  Bill Monroe\, Bobby Osborne\, Buck White\, Hank Williams\, The Everly Brothers\, Elvis Presley\, Fats Domino\, Bill Haley and his next door neighbor\, John Tolley\n\nBorn & raised in Ashton\, MD\, Dan’s first introduction to bluegrass music was at a Carlton Haney Festival in Watermelon Park\, Berryville\, Virginia.  Shortly after\, he purchased an old ‘A’ model Gibson and joined his first band called\, Mrs. Kimball’s Fruits\, Nuts and Berries named after his mother’s fruit stand in Ashton\, Maryland.  During the late 1960’s\, Dan started playing with some college buddies in a band called Rat Grass.  In the early 70’s Dan purchased a John Paganoni mandolin #20\, played in a traditional group called Appalachian Reign and later joined a group called Southgate.  In the late 70’s\, Dan would spent the winter months playing in a group called The Last Resort in the Florida Keys.  This loosely formed Florida group would always include other musicians from various parts of the country wintering in the Keys\, playing seven nights a week including happy hour atSloppy Joe’s and late night jams at The No Name Bar located on No Name Key.  Dan took a break from music for about 25 years and took over the family produce business.  After a lot of coaxing from Roger\,  Dan came out of musical retirement and joined the newly forming Annapolis Bluegrass Coalition and hasn’t looked back.  Dan’s high tenor is a perfect match for the duets that he sings with Roger and he has a talent for introducing the band to a diverse portfolio of material that lends itself easily to a traditional bluegrass sound. \n\n\n\n Terry Wittenberg\n\nBanjo and Lead/Tenor/High Baritone Vocals. Major bluegrass influences: Bill Emerson\, Ben Eldridge\n\nBorn in Baltimore\, MD & raised in Silver Spring\, MD\, Terry started his musical interest at age 7 with guitar. During his high school years\, Terry played rock guitar and was heavily influence by the early blues recordings of Eric Clapton. He was also a fan of country singer Buck Owens and learned how to sing tenor by emulating Buck’s tenor singer\, Don Rich.  Terry was introduced to bluegrass during an evening at the Red Fox Inn\, where he saw Bill Emerson playing banjo\, and he knew right then that banjo was what he wanted to play. Going full steam into bluegrass\, he was a founding member of the popular Washington DC group\, None of the Above. He also played with Southgate andOverland Express. Later he fronted his own band\, NewGrass Effect.  Terry is frequently called on to fill in with different bluegrass bands\, and occasionally would work with the Annapolis Bluegrass Coalition. In spring of 2014\, Terry became a member of Annapolis Bluegrass. He brings a new dynamic to the Annapolis Bluegrass vocal mix that includes lead\, tenor and high baritone. He contributes significantly to the hard driving sound that Annapolis Bluegrass is noted for and has a keen sense of originality in his approach to the banjo. Terry also has a unique capability of recognizing songs from different genre’s that will fit well into bluegrass. The tunes and songs that he introduces to the band helps keep the Annapolis Bluegrass repertoire fresh\, relevant and exciting. \n\nMike Hartnett\n\nFiddle.  Major bluegrass influences: Howard Forrester\, Kenny Baker. \nBorn in Baltimore Maryland and raised in Chase Maryland\, Mike started playing at age 12.  His early age musical influence was from his father\, also Mike Hartnett\, who played old time fiddle.  Mike brings over 30 years of fiddle experience with him adding a new dimension to the overall sound of the band.  His style is mostly in the traditional bluegrass vane\, but he also draws from the more eclectic as well as old timey fiddle.  Mike’s first bluegrass band was Overland Express and he stayed with them from 1978 until the early 1980s.  He then did a stint with the long standing and well known Patent Pending band and then moved on to a group known as the Lawson Brothers until the late eighties. Mike also played with other local bands such as Dean Sapp and Harford Expressthroughout the eighties and then reconnected with former Overland Express members in the popular Blue Daze  Band.  Other bands of note that Mike was a part of includes Shiloh Ridge from the York Pennsylvania area and Blue Train.  He is also much in demand as a fill in musician for groups such as Foggy Hollow and Across The Track.  With all his experience\, Mike has a wealth of stories and anecdotes regarding the bluegrass scene in and around the Baltimore area.  In August 2015\, Mike became a member of Annapolis Bluegrass and we are very pleased and fortunate to have Mike as a permanent member. \n\n\n\n\n\nJim Duvall\nBass Fiddle.  Major bluegrass influences: Jim & Jesse\, Seldom  Scene\, Country Gazette\nBorn in Washington DC\, grew up in Burtonsville\, Maryland.   Jim Duvall plays acoustic bass fiddle with the Annapolis Bluegrass Coalition.  He is the band’s metronome and does a very good job of keeping everyone honest when it comes to timing.  Although no stranger to music\, Annapolis Bluegrass is Jim’s first stint as a bluegrasser and acoustic bass player.  His musical background goes back more than thirty years and includes clarinet\, electric guitar in a Motown band called Louie & the Uptights\, and much more recently electric bass for a top 40s country band called Southern  Pride.  Jim’s addition to Annapolis Bluegrass provides a dynamic to the overall sound of the band\, by providing a fresh perspective on the traditional songs and innovation for the bands original compositions.  Occasionally during non-vocal songs\, Jim will take a solo break on his bass to the delight and amazement of the audience.  He plays an S-Model Kay bass\, the perfect instrument for the lower registers of bluegrass music.
