SUMMARY:Cafe Scientifique
DESCRIPTION:Annapolis Cafe Scientifique: A place where\, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine\, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. At 49 West\, CoffeeHouse\, Winebar and Gallery \n  \nDear Annapolis Cafe Scientifique Patrons\, \n  \nPlease join us on Thursday\, March 29 at 6:15pm at 49 West for the following presentation. Please reserve your seats by calling 410-626-9796. If you have reserved seats and do not plan on coming\, please release them by calling that same number. \nTitle: Frozen Visions: Science and Art Below the Freezing Point \nWhen: Thursday\, March 29\, 6:15-7:15pm.  \nPresenter: Dr. Peter Wasilewski\, Scientist Emeritus\, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center  \n  \nAbstract: Earth’s climate history can be addressed through the study of the shape and orientation\, revealed by the color\, of ice crystals in Polar ice core thin sections.  Using polarized light\, scientists investigate thin sections of ice along the length of an ice core to reveal the dynamic story of the ice cap and the associated climate extending to hundreds of thousands of years.  The Antarctic ice cap is an amazing laboratory. Meteorites can be found on the glacial blue ice patches and are an important source of information about the history of our solar system. Applying the same techniques used to study ice cores\, Dr. Peter Wasilewski learned from the study of the “meteoritic blue ice”. He then experimented with freezing water to evaluate various ways to alter the size and shape and orientation of ice crystals\, creating color patterns along the way. Science and art merged\, and ‘Frizions’ emerged.  Frizions are digital photographs of freezing or melting thin sheets of ice viewed through manipulated polarized light producing vivid colors and imaginative shapes. The visual magic happens when this experimental thin ice becomes the canvas for the union of science and art\, as seen through the artist’s eyes.  \nAbout the Speaker:  After serving 37 years as Planetary Scientist\, Dr. Peter Wasilewski began his career at Goddard as a Research Associate and retired as a Senior Investigator in 2010.  His work focused primarily on the magnetic properties of rocks including earth rocks\, moon rocks\, and meteorites. As a Scientist Emeritus\, Dr. Wasilewski has continued his connection with NASA as an organizer and contributor to educational programs at Goddard.  His primary education effort has been the annual ‘History of Winter’ Program\, a week-long NASA/Goddard outreach program for middle school and high school teachers\, throughout the US\, focused on providing teachers hands-on experience in the study of ice and snow which they can transfer to their students. \n  \nHope to see you on Thursday\, March 29; starting at 6:15pm\, at 49 West! \nTracy Gill and Andy Loftus

SUMMARY:The Dead Pens w/ Kit Whitacre
DESCRIPTION:Friday March 30th\, 2018\n8pm – 11pm / $10 per person\nCall to make a reservation:\n410-626-9796 \nAn acoustic show featuring Annapolis’s own “chamber-acoustic” trio\, “The Dead Pens”\, and renowned guitarist and frontman\, Kit Whitacre\, of the popular local rock band\, “The Chardonnay Boys”. \n• \nThe Dead Pens are a (mostly) acoustic trio. All three are professional musicians\, who met while working on other projects. \nGuitarist Ryan Abbott was founding member of the surf-punk band The Phantom Limbs\, who have several albums available on iTunes. He has performed live with a variety of well-known bands over the years\, touring and working as a session guitar player; lending guitar and piano tracks at Omega Studios and Sheffield’s Audio and Recording Studio in Baltimore County\, Maryland. Abbott has written and recorded five albums and has appeared as a guest on several more. He brought the other two members together to form the group. \nVocalist is Danah Koch. Singer-songwriter musician from Stevensville\, MD. Not only does Danah have solid songwriting skills\, her beautiful\, petite exterior hides a BIG voice and emotional power that is sought-after\, and has propelled Danah onto center stage of the local music scene. Danah is a classically-trained pianist\, and self-taught guitarist. \nCellist is Sally McGee. She trained as a classical musician who has played in a local orchestra\, several quartets\, and toured worldwide with the Washington Women’s Chorus. She took a break from classical music some years ago\, until Ryan talked her into doing some unusual studio work on the Phantom Limbs last album. He enjoyed the different sound and they began writing music together and working on unusual versions of current songs\, eventually recording the first Chick Habit album together. \n• \nKit Whitacre has been playing original rock n’ roll music for years\, as former member of the Dirty Names and the AMFMS with whom he toured the US\, Canada\, and Europe\, he now spends his time leading the Chardonnay Boys who just released their self-produced LP on Tiny Horns Records. Born and raised in Annapolis\, Kit is currently getting his new group ready to get back out on the road\, as well as producing and mixing many other talented local artists in the scene.

SUMMARY:2nd Monday Songwriters Showcase
DESCRIPTION:  \nApril’s 2nd Monday at 49 Songwriter Showcase is a must see. Returning acts Northern Outfit and Matt Hutchison are on the bill. I love these guys and you will too. Northern Outfit’s self-deprecating reflections on life will make you grin and their intricate harmonies will mesmerize you — four guys\, four voices\, and bluegrass instrumentation that comes off as both traditional and modern at the same time. These guys are lots of fun! And Matt Hutchison is not only one of my favorite local songwriters\, but he also has the voice to deliver those songs honestly and with conviction. You will not be disappointed with this show! Stop in and see us. Early evening show — starts at 7:30. If you come early\, you might be able to catch Northern Outfit warming up in the parking lot 😉

SUMMARY:Shook/ Russo 5 Tet
DESCRIPTION:Amy Shook – acoustic bass\nPat Shook – tenor saxophone\nFrank Russo – drums\nTim Leahey – trumpet\nJonathan Epley – guitar \nThe Shook/Russo 5tet has been performing together since 2005 in the mid-Atlantic region. Their focus has always been to compose and perform their own original music within the jazz idiom\, honoring the masters by carrying on the tradition. Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band. \n

SUMMARY:Intimate Jazz Series with Rogerio Souza Brazilian Quartet
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPlease call 410-626-9796 to make your reservations because space is limited! \nRogerio Souza Brazilian Quartet \nGuitarist and composer Rogerio Souza has traveled the world bringing the sounds of authentic Brazilian instrumental music to appreciative audiences far and wide. Annual tours to both U.S. coasts have included sold out shows in Washington\, D.C. and on Maryland’s Eastern Shore\, but this is his first appearance in Historic Annapolis. This concert offers classic styles such as choro\, samba\, bossa and baião in a refreshing and entertaining way. A respected composer himself\, Souza introduces listeners to great composers like Pixinguinha\, Radames Gnattalli\, Baden Powell and Paulinho da Viola. He’ll also pay tribute to Jacob do Bandolim. Born Jacob Pick Bittencourt\, the mandolinist was the most influential composer and performer of modern choro. His virtuosity on the Brazilian mandolin\, the “bandolim\,” garnered him the nickname Jacob do Bandolim. \nSousa’s group features some of Brazil’s finest musical ambassodors: guitarist Edinho Gerber and virtuoso seven-string bassist Leonardo Lucini\, along with American clarinetist Andy Connell. The concert is presented by Jazz Beyond Borders as part of Elana Byrd’s “Intimate Jazz” series at 49 West.
