It is also limited by seasonal accessibility\, making data difficult to collect. With the help of people just like you doing Citizen Science\, researchers in Antarctica have been able to make discoveries and collect data that they never dreamed possible. Thousands of people every year visit Antarctica on small expedition ships. Under the guidance of their expedition guides\, many of whom have a research background\, travelers participate in a diverse set of projects including cloud observations\, plankton collecting\, penguin counting\, and whale identification. Since collaborating with researchers\, Citizen Scientists in Antarctica have helped accelerate the pace of scientific discovery and data analysis.\nCome learn about Antarctic Citizen Science and how you can get involved\, even from home! \nAbout the Speaker: Lori Gross is an expedition guide and professional photographer. Her unique career path includes a brief stint as a dolphin trainer\, and over two decades working in sustainable tourism and education\, with a focus on marine and environmental science. Some of her accomplishments include securing over $25 million in grant funding for magnet schools\, working with over 500 teachers to help them write and implement engaging curricula\, designing over $1 million worth of interactive interpretive exhibits for nature centers and museums\, developing international field study trips for teens\, and being recognized multiple times by the Lucie Foundation and the International Photography Awards for her nature\, wildlife and pet photography. \nHaving worked in both the tropics and the poles\, Lori is particularly inspired by Antarctica\, where she has worked for the past 12 years. Their focus has always been to compose and perform their own original music within the jazz idiom\, honoring the masters by carrying on the tradition. Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band. \n

Inspiring growing numbers of fans with his distinctive approach of playing acoustic classical guitar with right hand classical technique\, the multi-faceted composer and performer scored a Top Ten Billboard Jazz single\, recorded tribute projects to his idol Charlie Byrd and the music of Brazil; and has performed hundreds of trio dates throughout the US\, Europe and Australia.\n2010 saw Najar release Groove Me on Woodward Avenue Records. A collaboration with Tony Award winning vocalist Melba Moore\, Groove Me reached into the top 10 of the Billboard Jazz chart. A St. Petersburg\, FL native who began playing guitar at age eight and considers Django Reinhardt\, Wes Montgomery and Charlie Byrd his primary influences\, Najar’s full length recordings on Candid Records – including 2012’s Blues For Night People: The Nate Najar Trio Remembers Charlie Byrd – earned him\naccolades from critics and influential jazz voices alike. We’re giving away a guitar every 90 days! \nHow do I sign up to perform at Open Mic Sundays?\nA sign-up sheet will be at the venue where you can sign up to perform. Please write down any special requests or ask the sound engineer if you have any questions or special needs. \nHow long or many songs can I/we play?\nAt this time\, we’re offering each performer a 10-minute set (two long songs\, or three short songs) and few minutes for setup.
