Their focus has always been to compose and perform their own original music within the jazz idiom\, honoring the masters by carrying on the tradition. Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band. \n

Her dynamic playing channels some of the early greats\, while adding a modern edge to the Jazz Manouche tradition. If you close your eyes\, you’ll find it hard to believe that such passion can be produced by a musician so young. It will make you believe in reincarnation\, and give you a fresh view on what lies ahead in the progression of Django’s legacy. \nDaisy has been an active member of the “Gypsy Jazz” community both in the United States and in Europe since she was 14 years old. She has played on stages on both continents with all of the masters. Now 20\, and with three recordings of this style under her belt\, she has earned the respect of said masters and their knowledgeable audiences\, which is no small feat in this traditionally male dominated genre. \nCompleting her quartet for this CD Release tour are guitarists\, Quinn Bachand and Max O’Rourke\, and bassist Greg Loughman\, who each have their own long lists of accomplishments\, awards\, and international touring experience. They will be promoting Daisy’s new project\, World On Fire. While still rooted in the same style as her earlier recordings\, Gypsy Moth(2010) and Déviation(2013)\, this one reaches even further around the globe for it’s influences. Encompassing everything from Django compositions to Salsa to traditional Turkish music\, it opens up a whole new world of exploration for these fantastic young musicians. The energy created when they come together is quite impressive. It is always a treat for audiences to see this kind of dedication to musical discovery manifest onstage. She won the grand prize in the Kusamakura Haiku Contest in 2007 and traveled to Kumamoto\, Japan to receive the award. She invented the English-language “psychological haiku”\, and has been identified with senryu for decades. Alexis is the author of 50 books\, and her most recent book\, Between Waves\, was published in 2015 by Red Moon Press. her work is widely anthologized in collections and journals including Haiku Mind (Shambhala)\, The Haiku Anthology (Norton)\, Beneath a Single Moon (Shambala)\, Talking to the Sun (Metropolitan Museum of Art)\, Teaching with Heart (Jossey-Bass) and Haiku Translated into Polish by Czeslaw Milosz. She co-edited the Ash Moon Anthology\, Poems on Aging (Modern English Tanka Press). and most recently Creative Writing: An Introduction to Poetry and Fiction (St. Martin’s Press). She has served as president of the Haiku Society of America\, and has edited Frogpond\, the Society’s journal\, and founded and edited the senryu journals Brussels Sprout and Prune Juice. Arlington native Derek Envry (alt/pop\, rock) will start off the show. \nShow at 8pm. 49 West St. – Annapolis\, MD.\nAdmission $10.00 (to the artists)\nCall 410-626-9796 to reserve your seat or just show up!\nAll are welcome! \nBio: \nHome \n \nThe music of Jack Williams\, rooted in his native South Carolina\, was shaped by a 54-year career of playing folk\, rock\, jazz\, R&B\, classical and the popular music of the 30s\, 40s and 50s. He is counted among the most dynamic performers on today’s “folk” circuit – “…one of the most enlightened and entertaining performers I’ve ever encountered”\, said Dave Humphreys of Two-Way Street Coffeehouse in Downer’s Grove\, IL. Jack is considered a “musician’s musician”\, an uncommonly unique guitarist\, a writer of vivid songs with a strong sense of place\, and a storyteller in an old Southern tradition who further illustrates each tale with his guitar. \nHis songs have been recorded by artists ranging from Tom Jones and David Clayton-Thomas to Chuck Pyle\, Cindy Mangsen\, Ronny Cox and Lowen & Navarro. In addition to his solo career\, as a guitarist he has accompanied such luminaries as Tom Paxton\, Peter Yarrow (of Peter\, Paul & Mary)\, Mickey Newbury and Harry Nilsson. \nKevin Oliver of NO DEPRESSION magazine described Jack’s music as “…a musical style that’s equal parts folk storytelling and Tin Pan Alley songcraft\, delivered with the impassioned soul of an old blues singer.” \nFrom 1958 through 1988\, along with playing jazz (trumpet) and classical guitar\, Jack was best known as an electric guitarist in a series of original rock bands and smaller acoustic ensembles. In the late 60’s\, he gave in to his troubadour nature and began performing solo – singing and playing a gut-string guitar and touring from coast to coast. \nPeter Yarrow (of Peter\, Paul and Mary) called Jack “…the best guitar player I’ve ever heard…” \nAs a hired-gun guitarist in the Deep South of the Civil Rights-Easy Rider 60’s\, Jack’s bands accompanied the likes of John Lee Hooker\, Big Joe Turner\, Jerry Butler\, Hank Ballard\, the Shirelles\, and the Del-Vikings. Jack Williams’ music\, enriched from these varied influences\, is a truly an All-American Southern music. \n————————————————————————————-\nDerek Evry is an alt/pop rock songwriter from Arlington\, Virginia.
