July 2017: Assistant Professor\, Department of Biology & Ecology Center\, Utah State University www.noellebeckman.com | verde-elemental.org \n  \nAbstract: Plants don’t move for most of their lives. They rely on vectors for the dispersal of their seeds. More than half of the world’s plant species are dispersed by vertebrates. Other modes of seed dispersal include wind\, water\, ballistic\, gravity\, and invertebrate. Dispersal influences the habitat in which a seed ends up. It affects whether a seed has the resources to survive and grow\, who its neighbors are\, and if it escapes being killed by consumers or disease located near the parent plant. These interactions influence which plants survive to adulthood. These adults will then contribute to populations through gene flow or the expansion of a species’ range. However\, human-mediated change\, such as climate change\, habitat fragmentation\, and invasive species\, affects the ecology and evolution of dispersal with potential dire consequences for biodiversity. More than one-quarter of vertebrates that disperse seeds are threatened with extinction due to overhunting\, habitat fragmentation\, and logging. In addition\, climate change is predicted to affect dispersal ability of plants by altering wind dynamics\, phenology\, and frugivore populations. These changes have the potential to reduce biodiversity and ecosystem functions\, such as carbon storage\, but the long-term impacts of these changes on biodiversity are unknown. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Noelle Beckman uses a combination of quantitative and empirical approaches to investigate interactions between plants and their environment and examines the role of these interactions in limiting plant populations and maintaining biodiversity. Many of these interactions are disrupted by global change\, and she examines the consequences of these disruptions for plant communities and ecosystem functions. Dr. Beckman earned her Ph.D. in  Ecology\, Evolution\, & Behavior at the University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities.  Before arriving to SESYNC\, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Mathematical Biosciences Institute. In 2017\, she will join the Department of Biology and the Ecology Center at Utah State University as an Assistant Professor. \n

Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band. \n

The band features acclaimed recording and performing artists bassist Max Murray\, saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk\, drummer Frank Russo and guitarist Donato Soveiro. \nAs a long time member of Afro Bop Alliance\, bassist Max Murray shared a Latin Grammy Award and a Grammy nomination for the 2008 album Caribbean Jazz Project with Dave Samuels. The Boston bred musician is a former U.S. Naval Academy Band member. \nSaxophonist Jeff Antoniuk has toured many continents since leaving Alberta\, Canada and is lauded for his heightened powers on the saxophone. DESCRIPTION:This month I’m looking forward to the triumphant return of The Redwine Trio to my 1st Fridays @49 West.  We’ve missed playing with our friend clarinetist Ben Redwine who moved to New Orleans in 2016 after serving for 27 with the US Naval Academy Band.  If you have never seen him\, you are in for a great night.  John Previti and I look forward to a weekend of hot jazz with our good pal and long-time bandmate.

Their focus has always been to compose and perform their own original music within the jazz idiom\, honoring the masters by carrying on the tradition. Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band. \n

DESCRIPTION:Led by drummer Steve Fidyk\, The Parlour Project is a new ensemble that trends on performing original improvisational music. Fidyk has earned national and international acclaim as a performer\, author\, and educator. He is a member of The Army Blues Big Band\, the Jazz Studies faculty at Temple University\, Philadelphia\, PA.\, and a contributing columnist for Modern Drummer Magazine. He has performed and recorded with Wayne Bergeron\, John Clayton\, Wycliffe Gordon\, Tim Hagans\, Slide Hampton\, Maureen McGovern\, James Moody\, New York Voices\, Dick Oates\, Arturo Sandoval\, Doc Severinsen\, Terell Stafford\, Tim Warfield\, and Bill Watrous. On tour with Maureen McGovern\, Fidyk has performed with orchestras throughout the country\, including The Cincinnati Pops\, Spokane Symphony\, Nashville Symphony\, Plano Symphony\, The Baltimore Symphony\, The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra\, and the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. His discography as a leader/co-leader includes: Big Kids (U.S. Roots)\, A Perfect Match (Write Groove)\, and Live at Blues Alley (OA2). Fidyk can also be heard on over 100 recordings as a contributing artist.
