DESCRIPTION:Please join us next Thursday\, May 25\, at 6pm for an Annapolis Cafe Scientifique talk by Dr. Jessican Needham: \nSeeing the forest through the trees: How computer models of tree life-cycles can help us understand forests across the globe \nAbstract: Without forests\, we would all be dead. Trees provide oxygen\, regulate the world’s climate\, provide habitat for hundreds of thousands of species\, and supply humans with everything from medicines to food to fuel. But trees grow excruciatingly slowly and live for a really long time\, making studying forests challenging for a scientist on a two-year contract. In addition\, the things that we care about\, i.e. how much carbon a forest takes up\, or how many animals it hosts\, result from the growth and survival patterns of individual trees and species. However\, there are over a trillion trees in the world and a single forest can be made up of thousands of different species. This talk will reveal how we can harness the power of statistics and computer models to scale up our understanding of how individual trees grow\, to how forests across the globe are saving us all from utter devastation.   Only 10 folks have signed up do far\, so feel free to invite folks who might be interested in this topic. Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. Starting with Shock and Naiman’s band Two Legs\, then The Polkats\, and now The Stone Hill All-Stars\, they have been at the helm of some of the best roots-rock bands in Baltimore. Their blend of styles lies somewhere between Ry Cooder and Los Lobos\, with the Pogues thrown in for good measure. The band features acclaimed recording and performing artists bassist Max Murray\, saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk\, drummer Frank Russo and guitarist Donato Soveiro. \nAs a long time member of Afro Bop Alliance\, bassist Max Murray shared a Latin Grammy Award and a Grammy nomination for the 2008 album Caribbean Jazz Project with Dave Samuels. The Boston bred musician is a former U.S. Naval Academy Band member. \nSaxophonist Jeff Antoniuk has toured many continents since leaving Alberta\, Canada and is lauded for his heightened powers on the saxophone. DESCRIPTION:Led by drummer Steve Fidyk\, The Parlour Project is a new ensemble that trends on performing original improvisational music. Fidyk has earned national and international acclaim as a performer\, author\, and educator. He is a member of The Army Blues Big Band\, the Jazz Studies faculty at Temple University\, Philadelphia\, PA.\, and a contributing columnist for Modern Drummer Magazine. He has performed and recorded with Wayne Bergeron\, John Clayton\, Wycliffe Gordon\, Tim Hagans\, Slide Hampton\, Maureen McGovern\, James Moody\, New York Voices\, Dick Oates\, Arturo Sandoval\, Doc Severinsen\, Terell Stafford\, Tim Warfield\, and Bill Watrous. On tour with Maureen McGovern\, Fidyk has performed with orchestras throughout the country\, including The Cincinnati Pops\, Spokane Symphony\, Nashville Symphony\, Plano Symphony\, The Baltimore Symphony\, The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra\, and the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. His discography as a leader/co-leader includes: Big Kids (U.S. Roots)\, A Perfect Match (Write Groove)\, and Live at Blues Alley (OA2). Fidyk can also be heard on over 100 recordings as a contributing artist.

Both of the Steve’s play arch top electric guitar – Both are terrific performers and also renowned music educators in this region. One compliments the other… It’s just a joy to watch and listen to them pour through the Great American Songbook of jazz favorites. Their CD entitled “Just Friends” will be on sale as well and you can pick up another great autograph of a jazz celebrity in Annapolis! Abshire was the guitar chair of the famous US Navy Commodores for over 20 years\, played often with Charlie and Joe Byrd. Herberman came a little later and played with Joe Byrd\, so both of these guys are our “friends” and love to play in Annapolis!
