SUMMARY:Daisy Castro & The Olivarez Trio
DESCRIPTION:Daisy Castro & The Olivarez Trio \nFriday\, July 28\, 2017 – 8:00 pm \n$20 cover \n  \nDaisy Castro – \nAn outstanding interpreter of early European Jazz of the 1930’s and 40’s\, \nstunning first time audience members\, and continuing to enthrall even \nthose that have seen her perform many times before. Daisy’s dynamic playing channels some of the early greats\, while adding \na modern edge to the Jazz Manouche tradition. \nHer new project\, World On Fire\, while still rooted in the same style as her earlier recordings\, reaches even further around the \nglobe for it’s influences.Encompassing everything from Django compositions to Salsa to traditional Turkish music \, it opens \nup a whole new world of exploration for this fantastic young musician. \nThe Olivarez Trio – \nBased in Charlottesville\,Virginia\, the Olivarez Trio\, Rick Olivarez\, Dave Berzonsky and Jeff Cheers\, create a vibrant acoustic \nrepertoire of FrenchGypsy jazz styles mixed with eastern European folklore\, waltzes\, early jazz improvisations\, with a \nsampling of everything from Classical and Baroque themes to Beatles melodies. It’s a new roots music that only the Olivarez \nTrio can provide. \nThe combination of these four musicians should make for an exhilarating blend of styles punctuated with some fun \nimprovisation as enjoyable for audiences to listen to as it will be for them to play. \nwww.facebook.com/daisycastromusic \nwww.daisycastro.com (coming soon!) \nhttp://rick-olivarez.squarespace.com/about/

DESCRIPTION:Amy Shook – acoustic bass\nPat Shook – tenor saxophone\nFrank Russo – drums\nTim Leahey – trumpet\nJonathan Epley – guitar \nThe Shook/Russo 5tet has been performing together since 2005 in the mid-Atlantic region. Their focus has always been to compose and perform their own original music within the jazz idiom\, honoring the masters by carrying on the tradition. Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band. \n

SUMMARY:Cafe Scientifique
DESCRIPTION:Annapolis Cafe Scienitfique: A place where\, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine\, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. At 49 West\, CoffeeHouse\, Winebar and Gallery \nPlease call 49 West to reserve your seat at 410-626-9796\, or to release your seat if you will not be able to attend; thanks! \nTitle: An Asteroid\, An Ice Age\, and finally the Chesapeake!  \nSpeaker: Peter Wasilewski\,  Scientist Emeritus\, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center \n  \nAbstract: 35 million years ago\, near what is now the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia\, an asteroid 2 miles in diameter punched a deep hole in the mud and rock beneath a shallow sea that existed at the time. The impact created an enormous tsunami possibly reaching as far as the Blue Ridge Mountains.  The event created the largest known impact crater in the United States and had permanent consequences for the setting of the Chesapeake Bay.  The crater was 52 miles wide and over 1 mile deep – bigger than Rhode Island and as deep as the Grand Canyon.  Rock was fractured as deep as 7 miles. The crater influenced river flow and defined the mouth of the Bay.  Ice age cycles since the impact have caused the ocean levels to vary by almost 400 feet helping to sculpt the Susquehanna River valley.  The Chesapeake Bay is basically the drowned Susquehanna River valley.  Dr. Wasilewski will describe how plate tectonics\, an asteroid\, and the ice age have created the Chesapeake Bay. \nAbout the Speaker: As a NASA scientist\, Dr. Peter Wasilewski had a career dedicated to studying magnetic properties of solar system materials including moon rocks\, meteorites and earth rocks.  His passion for scientific quests led him to turn down a contract to play professional football for the Baltimore Colts so that he could participate in an expedition to the world’s largest piece of ice – Antarctica.  He returned to Antarctica six times to tread at times where no human had previously set foot.  Near the base of the Antarctic Peninsula stands an ancient volcano that bears his name – Mount Wasilewski. Building on this experience\, he was instrumental in the development and execution of NASA educational programs for science teachers from across the country to enhance their teaching expertise through experiential activities with ice and snow.  His interests in combining science and art resulted in the creation of Frizion\, an art form using photographs using polarized light as water begins to freeze and then melt (www.frizion.com).  He currently lectures on cruise ships\, on topics relating to various destination and science-based topics. Dr. Wasilewski has a Doctor of Science degree from the University of Tokyo. \nAnd coming up for August and September: \nAugust 31: An Idea for a Global Greenhouse Gas Initiative\, by Will Chandler \nSeptember 28: Ping\, Boom & Growl: How human-produced underwater sounds affect marine animals\, by Adam S. Frankel\, Ph.D.\, Biological Oceanography\, Marine Acoustics\, Inc.\, Hawai‘i Marine Mammal Consortium. \nHope to see you next Thursday! \nTracy Gill & Andy Loftus
