Their focus has always been to compose and perform their own original music within the jazz idiom\, honoring the masters by carrying on the tradition. Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band. \n

DESCRIPTION:Who: Jefferson Holland\nWhat: “A Chesapeake Troubadour”\nWhen: Saturday\, November 20\nTime: 7 – 9 p.m.\nWhere: 49 West\nAdmission: $10 cover\nJefferson Holland is a modern-day Chesapeake Troubadour: singer\, songwriter\, poet\, story-teller\, performing all original material inspired by decades of life on the Bay. Jeff has served as the director of the Annapolis Maritime Museum and the Riverkeeper for the West and Rhode Rivers. He co-founded the Chesapeake folk group “Crab Alley” in the 1980s and 90s and founded “Them Eastport Oyster Boys” with partner Kevin Brooks in 1992. \nIn 2019\, Jeff co-produced the Chesapeake Music Festival at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center as part of the Smithsonian’s Year of Music. He has performed all around the Chesapeake as well as venues outside the watershed\, including Ireland\, Estonia and Annapolis Royal\, Nova Scotia. Jeff has written dozens of songs and recorded four CDs. In 1994\, he was appointed the Poet Laureate of Eastport and published the children’s book\, Chessie the Sea Monster that Ate Annapolis. \nCurrently\, Jeff writes an outdoor adventure column in the Annapolis Capital and articles for Chesapeake Bay Magazine\, What’s Up? Annapolis and other publications. He lives in Annapolis with his emotional support spouse\, Louise White. \n
