No cover\, just walk on in\, seat yourself. – we’re in the front room. \nJenn Byrne is the foundation of the group\, playing the upright bass\, and doing the Lion’s share of the singing. Jenn has an enigmatic and versitile voice\, which is capable of a wide variety of styles. In addition to The Befuddlers Jenn can be seen around town with her other group\, the Hypnotic Panties. She also has a band with her brother Jeremy\, and father Pete which is called Crosstown. \nLarry Byrne is a multi-instumentalist and singer\, and lays down the rhythm on acoustic guitar with The Befuddlers. Larry sits on the board of AMFM\, a charity organization for musicians based in Annapolis. He can be seen playing with many local groups at AMFM fundraisers. Larry also plays with the local funk group\, Higher Hands\, playing the keyboards and supplying left hand bass. He also loves to join the Hypnotic Panties whenever possible! \nPete Reichwein is the father of Jenn\, and the Dobro player in the group. Pete has been a fixture in the Bluegrass community for decades\, but is also an extremely diverse musician with a good knowledge of many different styles of music.\nNo Cover Charge

Call 410-626-9796. \n  \nSaxophone master and composer Michel Nirenberg returns to the U.S. for his 2016 fall tour. In October and November\, he’ll share the vibrant melodies and rhythms of his native Brazil with jazz and world music fans in the Mid-Atlantic. On Sunday\, November 20\, he’ll make his Annapolis debut with pianist Tim Murphy in the Sunday Supper and Jazz series presented by Elana Byrd at 49 West Café from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. \nIn recent months\, Nirenberg has been making music in his hometown\, Rio de Janeiro\, collaborating with friends and performing tunes from his 2015 debut album\, Retrato/Portrait. First released in the U.S.\, the recording was well received. It soared on the American CMJ radio charts peaking at No. 6. Dan Bilawski of All About Jazz wrote\, “In terms of style\, substance\, and execution\, Nirenberg ranks high. This is some brilliant Brazilian jazz.” Raul da Gama of Latin Jazz Network called Nirenberg\, “a player who uses virtuosity not for self-aggrandizement but to glorify the music.” \nNirenberg first came to the U.S. to attend graduate school.  After earning many awards and an undergraduate degree in Brazil\, he earned a master’s degree in classical performance from James Madison University in Virginia. Before returning to Brazil he released his first album and joined the roster of Jazz Beyond Borders artists. \nIn these U.S. appearances and a subsequent tour of Israel\, Nirenberg will begin sharing some tunes slated for his next recording. In Annapolis\, he’ll be backed by several international performers including Brazilian seven-string bassist Leonardo Lucini\, American pianist Tim Murphy and English drummer Geoff Easthope. \nListeners will hear selections from the album and exciting new compositions and arrangements meant to introduce American music fans to a wider range of Brazilian jazz and instrumental music styles. Nirenberg’s composition “Faith\,” mixes baião\, partido alto and maracatu rhythms. Another recent and deeply spiritual composition\, “Bahia de Todos os Santos” is an Ijexá\, a rhythm from the state of Bahia in the northeast of Brazil. Bahia’s capital\, Salvador\, was built around Todos os Santos (All Saint’s Bay) and was a major port in the slave trade. Nirenberg introduces and ends the piece with a traditional capoeira chant and percussion solo. \nNirenberg will also cover “Espinha de Bacalhau\,” one of Brazil’s most popular and recognizable choros\, written by the great Severino Araújo in 1937. The title\, which means “a fish spine\,” refers to it’s up tempo speed and technical difficulty. Fortunately\, his team of international musicians is clearly up to the task! The band features acclaimed recording and performing artists bassist Max Murray\, saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk\, drummer Frank Russo and guitarist Donato Soveiro. \nAs a long time member of Afro Bop Alliance\, bassist Max Murray shared a Latin Grammy Award and a Grammy nomination for the 2008 album Caribbean Jazz Project with Dave Samuels. The Boston bred musician is a former U.S. Naval Academy Band member. \nSaxophonist Jeff Antoniuk has toured many continents since leaving Alberta\, Canada and is lauded for his heightened powers on the saxophone. Jazz Times praised his considerable chops while MusikReviews.com described his amazing saxophone playing. He is a recognized master of modern jazz\, hard bop and funk. \nDrummer Frank Russo enjoyed a long career with the U.S. Naval Academy Band\, and has since won critical praise for his work with many jazz greats. His recordings have gained recognition from Downbeat\, Jazz Times and Modern Drummer. He has performed at numerous jazz festivals in North America\, Asia\, and Europe. \nGuitarist Donato Soviero has appeared with numerous groups in the US\, Europe and the Caribbean. Like his bandmates\, he has performed at all the top Washington\, D.C. concert venues. Tom Cole\, host of WPFW’S G Strings said Donato’s beautiful phrasing and impressive improvising took me aback. He’s one of those real surprises.
