They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band. \n

April 27 talk\, 6-7:15pm ET: “Trials and Tribulations in Battling Invasive Fishes”\, by Joseph Love\, Ph.D.\, Program Manager\, Freshwater Fisheries Program\, Maryland Department of Natural Resources \nAbout this Talk: Invasive fishes of Chesapeake Bay watershed have presented resource managers and the general public challenges for nearly two decades\, with some met with success. When introduced to the Chesapeake Bay watershed\, invasive catfishes (blue catfish and flathead catfish) were considered primarily beneficial targets for recreational anglers. That attitude has changed\, though\, as each species has expanded their range in the watershed\, with blue catfish becoming far more abundant and widespread than flathead catfish\, but both posing significant threats. These species were joined by a new invasive fish in the early 2000’s when northern snakeheads were discovered in tidal freshwater of Potomac River. Like the invasive catfishes\, northern snakehead\, thanks to its extraordinary dispersal ability and unwise human assistance\, has expanded its range and abundance and now occupies every major river drainage\, as well as some lakes and ponds. The massive expansion of invasive fishes has been challenging to deter with regulations and laws\, though outreach has been successful in informing the general public as to what these invasive fishes are and the problems they could cause. Additionally\, this information when coupled with harvest incentives\, has been successful at encouraging people to fish and eat these invasive fishes. Harvest incentives have included prizes from random drawings\, prizes during fishing derbies\, invasive fish state record awards\, and most recently\, cash awards for reporting and harvesting tagged fish. As momentum continues to create harvest fisheries for these species\, research becomes even more vital to help understand their impacts\, and manage public expectations. \nBrief Bio: Dr. Joseph Love\, a graduate from Mississippi State University and postdoctoral researcher at University of Maryland Eastern Shore\, joined the Maryland Department of Natural Resources in 2009. As a program manager for the Freshwater Fisheries Program\, he helps to manage largemouth bass fisheries in tidal freshwater and represents the program on the Department’s Invasive Species Matrix Team. He has worked with both northern snakehead and blue catfish\, as well helped author state management plans associated with those species and flathead catfish. Currently\, he collaborates routinely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on several projects aimed at harvesting and studying impacts of northern snakeheads. \n042723 catfish.jpg \nZoom Info for 4/27/23 Talk: If you cannot attend in person\, join the Zoom Meeting. SUMMARY:Donna Long\, Peter Brice\, and Samantha Suplee @ 49 West
DESCRIPTION:ANNAPOLIS\, MD — Donna Long (piano\, fiddle)\, Peter Brice (voice\, button accordion)\, and Samantha Suplee (fiddle) will present a concert of traditional music from Ireland and Irish America\, drawing on a repertoire of jigs\, reels\, 17th-century harp music\, and songs from the Age of Revolution. Maryland songs will be included for good measure. The concert will also feature Catherine Brice (step dance) and Kate Spanos (step dance)\, who will present original and traditional set dances from Irish traditions. 22 April 2023. 8:00 pm. $20. 49 West at 49 West Street\, Annapolis\, Maryland 21401. \nDONNA LONG was born in Los Angeles\, California. When she was five years old\, she began taking piano lessons with her father\, Byron Long\, a jazz/classical pianist who instilled in Donna a love for music. As a child\, Donna was exposed to many different genres of music\, including players from the old and new Jazz eras\, Classical\, Scottish\, Indian\, and African. \nIn 1978\, she moved to the Baltimore/Washington\, DC area and heard fiddler\, Brendan Mulvihill playing Irish music. He inspired her to pick up the fiddle and gave her a solid foundation in style and playing. She then began to accompany him on the piano and now Donna is considered one of the finest pianists playing Irish music. Along with Brendan Mulvihill\, she has recorded two duet albums\, The Steeplechase and The Morning Dew. \nDonna passed her music on to her son Jesse Smith and helped produce his first solo recording entitled The Hurricane. In addition to these recordings Donna can be heard as a guest artist on many recordings backing up other musicians and also on the motion picture soundtrack Out of Ireland . A former member of the internationally acclaimed Irish groupCherish the Ladies \, she has recorded five CDs with them. In the year 2000\, the Smithsonian Institution asked Donna to represent Irish Music in the series\, Piano Traditions celebrating 300 years of the piano. Donna was also commissioned by the Library of Congress in 2001 to write a composition for fiddle and piano. She wrote a slow air called Before the Snow Falls\, and a reel to accompany the air called Pandora’s Box. These tunes were performed by Cherish the Ladies and can be found in the Library of Congress. Donna currently teaches Suzuki piano\, Irish piano and Irish fiddle in the Baltimore/ Washington\, DC area. Her first solo CD\, Handprints\, was released in June 2003. \nPETER BRICE sings old songs in a traditional style\, and plays Irish Traditional music on the button accordion. A native Annapolitan and an exponent of Baltimore\, Maryland’s Irish traditional music community\, Peter’s work blends singing and musicianship with musicology and history\, humor and colorful design\, and a vision for traditional culture as a foundation for an intellectual life. His playing reflects his admiration for Galway accordionists such as Joe Cooley\, Kevin Keegan\, and Raymond Roland—a style into which he was initiated by Brooklyn-born accordionist and National Heritage Fellow Billy McComiskey. He advanced his playing under the tutelage of Adare-born accordionist Derek Hickey. A lifelong singer\, Peter has married a repertoire of American historical songs with a wide-ranging English-language style that he gleaned from his mentors Dónal Maguire\, Louisa Jo Killen\, and Lisa Null\, as well as from members of his family. \nHe is a former vice-chair of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann’s O’Neill-Malcom Branch in Washington\, D.C. and a past co-coordinator of the Washington Folk Festival. He founded the Baltimore Singers Club with singers Andy O’Brien and Pat Egan to promote traditional singing in Maryland\, and was a founding member of the Old Bay Ceili Band. With singers Lisa Null and Judy Cook\, he created a project—Yankee Frolics—to revive traditional songs about the War of 1812 for the bicentennial of that conflict. \nIn 2014\, he and his mentor Billy McComiskey were recognized by the Maryland State Arts Council as a traditional arts master-apprentice pair. He received the Maryland Traditions Apprenticeship Award again in 2019 with singer Lisa Null. He has independently written over $22\,000 in awarded grants for Maryland’s Irish traditional music community. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory Preparatory program\, where he studied with Susan Harwood\, Peter also holds a BA in Irish Traditional Music and Dance from the University of Limerick. \nSAMANTHA SUPLEE is a fiddle player from Washington\, D.C. She studied classical and traditional music with Mitch Fanning\, Brendan Mulvihill\, and Brian Conway\, and has performed at the Embassy of Ireland in Washington\, D.C.\, the Millenium Stage at the Kennedy Center\, NYU’s Glucksman Irish House\, the Penn Mar Irish Festival\, and the Maryland Irish Festival\, among others. In 2011\, she competed in the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Cavan\, Ireland. She is a regular guest with the New Century American Irish-Arts Company\, and enjoys playing at various sessions in Annapolis and Washington\, D.C

SUMMARY:ITZALL Goode Music and SHC Music Presents David Jacobs-Strain and Bob Beach
DESCRIPTION:ITZALL Goode Music and SHC Music Presents David Jacobs-Strain and Bob Beach\nApril 18\, 7:30 to 9:30 \nAdvanced Tickets $17: https://DavidJacobsStrain.eventbrite.com\nDoor $20 \nIf you reserve an advanced ticket\, you do not need to call to make a reservation. If you do not buy an advanced ticket\, reservations are highly recommended. You can make them by calling 49 West at 410-626-9796. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS\nABOUT ARTISTS:\nhttps://davidjacobs-strain.com\nVideo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqOsMyCd9ik\n“David Jacobs-Strain and Bob Beach blew me away last summer at Swannanoa. As we say at home\, they knocked my hat in the creek. I can’t envision the audience that could fail to take to them from the first chord and to the last. Hear them yourself as soon as you can.”\n— Tom Paxton\nDavid Jacobs-Strain and Bob Beach sit side-by-side on the stage. A Pogreba guitar\, built by the man who built the cannon Hunter S. Thompson was shot out of\, sits loosely in David’s hands. Bob adjusts the distance to his 1940’s RCA microphone then leans over the box propped open at his side and grabs 2 harmonicas. They are calm. Poised. The crowd has no idea what they are in for next.\nDavid Jacobs-Strain and Bob Beach are a multigenerational\, bicoastal duo who have been performing together since 2010. They currently perform between 70 and 100 shows a year on both the east and west coasts\, delighting and bewildering roots music lovers.\nDavid Jacob-Strain is a striking slide guitar player and a song poet from Eugene\, Oregon. His deep love of blues and roots music is evident in every one of the songs he writes. He studied masters like Robert Johnson\, Taj Mahal\, and Jackson Browne\, but plays his own sound\, his own song\, with a virtuosity that is uniquely his. David began playing on street corners and at farmers’ markets as a teenager\, and bought his first steel guitar with the quarters he saved up. Before he dropped out of Stanford to play full time\, he had already appeared at festivals across the country\, often billed as a blues prodigy\, but he had to fight to avoid being a novelty act: “I wanted to tell new stories\, it just wasn’t enough to relive the feelings in other people’s music.” David Jacobs-Strain has appeared at Merlefest\, Telluride Blues Festival\, Philadelphia Folk Festival\, Hardly Strictly\, Bumbershoot\, and Blues to Bop in Switzerland. On the road\, he’s shared the stage with Lucinda Williams\, Boz Scaggs (more than 60 shows)\, Etta James\, The Doobie Brothers\, George Thorogood\, Robert Earle Keen\, Todd Snider\, Taj Mahal\, Janis Ian\, Tommy Emmanuel\, Bob Weir\, T-Bone Burnett\, and Del McCoury.\nBob Beach plays harmonica with calm fierceness. A mouth-harp maestro who swaggers into a solo like The Marlboro Man\, then quietly leaves the set while the rest of us wonder what just happened and how such a tiny instrument could possibly sound like that. Bob has been a working professional musician for more than 40 years bringing harmonica\, flute\, and vocals to a broad scope of genres. A native Philadelphian\, Bob relocated to Western PA after high school and worked in bands and musical projects from 1976 to 1997 while based in Pittsburgh. As a sideman\, he has recorded or performed with acts such as; Ollabelle\, Langhorne Slim\, The Avett Brothers\, Pat Wictor\, Beaucoup Blue\, Fruit\, and many more. Bob was also a sound engineer at The World Café Live music venue for 15 years. Bob Beach is a working musician who carved out his own career on his own terms\, raised a daughter\, stayed married 40 years\, and is still playing for the love of it. The heart of it. The fun of it.\nTogether\, David and Bob play unrestrained and from the heart. “Have you ever seen anything like this before?” Wait. Just wait until you see them live.
