Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band. \n

He has performed and recorded with Wayne Bergeron\, John Clayton\, Wycliffe Gordon\, Tim Hagans\, Slide Hampton\, Maureen McGovern\, James Moody\, New York Voices\, Dick Oates\, Arturo Sandoval\, Doc Severinsen\, Terell Stafford\, Tim Warfield\, and Bill Watrous. On tour with Maureen McGovern\, Fidyk has performed with orchestras throughout the country\, including The Cincinnati Pops\, Spokane Symphony\, Nashville Symphony\, Plano Symphony\, The Baltimore Symphony\, The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra\, and the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. His discography as a leader/co-leader includes: Big Kids (U.S. Roots)\, A Perfect Match (Write Groove)\, and Live at Blues Alley (OA2). Fidyk can also be heard on over 100 recordings as a contributing artist.

Jenn has an enigmatic and versitile voice\, which is capable of a wide variety of styles. In addition to The Befuddlers Jenn can be seen around town with her other group\, the Hypnotic Panties. She also has a band with her brother Jeremy\, and father Pete which is called Crosstown. \nLarry Byrne is a multi-instumentalist and singer\, and lays down the rhythm on acoustic guitar with The Befuddlers. Larry sits on the board of AMFM\, a charity organization for musicians based in Annapolis. He can be seen playing with many local groups at AMFM fundraisers. Larry also plays with the local funk group\, Higher Hands\, playing the keyboards and supplying left hand bass. He also loves to join the Hypnotic Panties whenever possible! \nPete Reichwein is the father of Jenn\, and the Dobro player in the group. Pete has been a fixture in the Bluegrass community for decades\, but is also an extremely diverse musician with a good knowledge of many different styles of music.\nNo Cover Charge

Frankel\, Ph.D.\, Biological Oceanography\, Marine Acoustics\, Inc.\, Hawai‘i Marine Mammal Consortium. \nAbstract: Abstract: Anthropogenic (human-made) noise in the ocean is a topic of wide\nconcern\, especially with the potential reopening of the mid-Atlantic region to\nseismic exploration. We’ll explore natural and anthropogenic sources of sound\, how\nsound propagates underwater\, and known animal responses to specific sound types.\nAbout the Speaker: Marine biologist\, Dr. Adam Frankel\, has been studying the effect\nof noise on marine mammals for over 30 years\, especially their acoustic behavior in\nresponse to human-generated sounds. His primary research focuses on the song of\nHawaiian humpback whales. \nA graduate of the College of William & Mary\, Adam received a Masters and\nPhD. from the University of Hawai‘i and conducted post-doctoral work with Dr.\nChris Clark in Cornell University’s Bioacoustics Research Lab. He works for Marine\nAcoustics Inc.\, a Rhode Island/Virginia-based company that provides\nenvironmental\, underwater acoustics and information technology support\nhttp://marineacoustics.com. \nAbout the Speaker: Adam is a founding member and Vice President of the Hawai’i Marine\nMammal Consortium\, a non-profit research\, education and outreach group that\nstudies Hawai’i’s marine mammals. Since the 1990s\, Adam has taught Bioacoustical Oceanography workshops and field courses for Cornell University at Friday Harbor Marine Lab (studying orcas of the Puget Sound) and Hawai‘i Island (studying humpbacks\, melon-headed whales\, and dolphins)\, as well as teaching for Penn State’s Bioacoustics Summer School (SeaBASS). He is co-author of “Modeling the aggregated exposure and responses of bowhead whales Balaena mysticetus to multiple sources of anthropogenic underwater sound”\, published in Endangered Species Research (2016). He wrote the chapter\, “Sound Production”\nfor the Encyclopedia of Marine Mammals (2009. Update in press). He has served on\ngraduate student committees\, including Georgetown University. \nAnd coming up in October\, we have: \nOctober 26: Timing the flood: sea level rise\, tidal flooding and future exposure along America’s coasts\, by William Sweet\, Oceanographer\, NOAA’s Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS)\, Planning\, Monitoring and Analysis Branch \nAbout the Speaker: William Sweet is a NOAA oceanographer researching changes in coastal exposure due to sea level rise (SLR). He recently helped the U.S. military assess SLR risks to their coastal installations and led the production of a new set of regional SLR scenarios for the 4th U.S. National Climate Assessment.
