He attended Duke University for college\, medical school and the family medicine residency program. He taught for one year in residency while his wife Jan Byrd finished her OB-GYN residency and they moved to Annapolis in 1984. Scott recently retired from his 40th year of practicing family medicine in Annapolis. He convinced the Anne Arundel Medical Center to open Community Clinics in 2011\, and he was the medical director of the clinics for 11 years; these clinics are still open.\nHe is interested in wellness and preventive medicine. He was the distance running coach at Annapolis High School for 13 years. And he was a two-time NCAA All American in cross country while at Duke\, he won the Marine Corps Marathon in 1978\, and he qualified for the Olympic Trials in the marathon in 1980.
