Be it through blues\, swing\, bebop\, soul jazz\, or more modern funk and groove\, the group has developed an incredible and unique sound by merging the diverse backgrounds of each of these fine musicians into one voice. The result is a whirlwind of grooves\, melodies\, and diverse textures that are a true delight to hear. Collectively\, the members of the Shook/Russo 5tet have performed extensively throughout the United States\, as well as performed in Canada\, Mexico\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Caribbean and at festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival\, the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, the Stan Getz Jazz Festival\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the Wall Street Jazz Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to name a few. They currently have two CDs out on Summit Records\, and will be releasing a new album later this year\, featuring all new music by members of the band. \n

The band features acclaimed recording and performing artists bassist Max Murray\, saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk\, drummer Frank Russo and guitarist Donato Soveiro. \nAs a long time member of Afro Bop Alliance\, bassist Max Murray shared a Latin Grammy Award and a Grammy nomination for the 2008 album Caribbean Jazz Project with Dave Samuels. The Boston bred musician is a former U.S. Naval Academy Band member. \nSaxophonist Jeff Antoniuk has toured many continents since leaving Alberta\, Canada and is lauded for his heightened powers on the saxophone. Jazz Times praised his considerable chops while MusikReviews.com described his amazing saxophone playing. He is a recognized master of modern jazz\, hard bop and funk. \nDrummer Frank Russo enjoyed a long career with the U.S. Naval Academy Band\, and has since won critical praise for his work with many jazz greats. Any science lecture questions\, please email Tracy Gill at annapoliscafesci@gmail.com. \n  \nThe Climate Apocalypse \n  \nRapidly growing human population accompanied by a rapid increase in the use of fossil fuels is straining the resources of our planet and may lead to our extinction.  This presentation illustrates the problems we face and the results we will reap with and without a change in the way we generate our energy and use our resources. Unless we address our careless behavior and plan a course to deal with the impact on Earth we will lose everything. By designing proactive programs to deal with these challenges\, we can alter the future in a positive way. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: St. John (Sinjin) Martin graduated from the University of Maryland in 1965 with a degree in electrical engineering.  He then worked for Honeywell and several other area companies as well as NSA.  After retiring\, he spent several years studying climate change causes and effects before joining Arctic Energies\, an alternate energy company that pursued ammonia-based systems.  It was that association that spurred interest in designing systems using solar\, wind\, geothermal and ocean energy to produce electricity and vehicle fuels.

Aided by two formidable vocalists and solid rhythm section\, the pianist and composer will deliver his own special brand of jazz featuring plenty of harmony and groove shot with rhythm and blues! \nMarshall has performed in clubs and concert halls as far north as Toronto\, Canada and as far south as Rio De Janeiro\, Brazil. He has graced the stages of many celebrated venues in the nation’s capital including\, The Kennedy Center\, Wolf Trap and Blues Alley. Always the epitome of taste and artistry\, Marshall offers beloved standards to complement his own acclaimed compositions. His 2014 debut recording\, Arrival\, reached No. 25 on the CMJ jazz charts and received rave reviews from critics.\nVocal harmony enriches and enlivens Terry Marshall’s music. His recording and the Annapolis performance feature luscious vocal harmony in many selections. Singers Iva Ambush and Kendra Johnson skillfully bend many songs into unique and interesting shapes.\nListeners will hear selections such as Marshall’s composition “Teresa\,” a samba in ¾ time. (Samba is almost always written and played in 4/4.) The band will cover a related Brazilian song\, “Upside Down\,” written by the iconic composer Djavan. \nArranged by Terry Marshall\, “This Bitter Earth” is another enticing piece jazz lovers can anticipate.\nIt features the voice of Kendra Johnson and Marshall on piano. A classic jazz ballad\, it was made popular by Dinah Washington. The piece exemplifies the period in the late 50s through the 60s when singers like Dinah Washington and Etta James blurred the lines between Jazz and Rhythm and Blues. Kendra Johnson’s vocal performance on the 2014 album was exceptionally well received by critics and the 49 West audience will soon hear the reason why.

No cover\, just walk on in\, seat yourself. – we’re in the front room. \nJenn Byrne is the foundation of the group\, playing the upright bass\, and doing the Lion’s share of the singing. Jenn has an enigmatic and versitile voice\, which is capable of a wide variety of styles. In addition to The Befuddlers Jenn can be seen around town with her other group\, the Hypnotic Panties. She also has a band with her brother Jeremy\, and father Pete which is called Crosstown. \nLarry Byrne is a multi-instumentalist and singer\, and lays down the rhythm on acoustic guitar with The Befuddlers. Larry sits on the board of AMFM\, a charity organization for musicians based in Annapolis. He can be seen playing with many local groups at AMFM fundraisers. Larry also plays with the local funk group\, Higher Hands\, playing the keyboards and supplying left hand bass. He also loves to join the Hypnotic Panties whenever possible! \nPete Reichwein is the father of Jenn\, and the Dobro player in the group. Pete has been a fixture in the Bluegrass community for decades\, but is also an extremely diverse musician with a good knowledge of many different styles of music.\nNo Cover Charge
