SUMMARY:Cafe Scientifique
DESCRIPTION:Annapolis Cafe Scientifique: A place where\, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine\, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. At 49 West\, CoffeeHouse\, Winebar and Gallery. \n \nPlease reserve your seats by calling 410-626-9796\,and if you reserve but decide not to come\, please release your seats at the same number; thanks. \n  \nDear Annapolis Cafe Scientifique Patrons\, \n  \nPlease join us this Thursday August 30\, at 6:15pm at 49 West for: \nTalking Trash: Cleaning up Marine Debris Before it Reaches the Sea by Pamela Kellett \nAbstract: A daily walk to work in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor inspired the invention of a hydro and solar powered machine that continuously cleans rivers during storm events. Today there are three water wheel powered trash interceptors working in three different watersheds to keep floating trash and debris from entering the Patapsco River. With the addition of googly eyes these machines have taken on personalities and are a social media sensation. Due to its unique design and effectiveness it has garnered many awards and international attention. It has been featured in National Geographic\, Popular Science\, and CNN and many other media outlets. A winner of the prestigious architectural  “Highest honors for Excellence in Waterfront  Design” award\, the trashwheel is proving to be a successful interim solution for cities as they educate about the impacts of stormwater runoff\, and improve trash collecting infrastructure. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: Pamela Kellett has worked as an Environmental Scientist for Clearwater Mills since its inception in 2007. She helps determine hydrologic flow and has travelled to Panama to evaluate the potential for implementing waterwheel technology in Panama City.  She has a Masters of Science in Environmental Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins University and is married to the Trashwheel’s inventor and builder\, John Kellett. Prior to working with Clearwater Mills she was captain of the schooner “Lady Maryland” and then taught a science based curriculum at a nature preschool in Pasadena Md. She was raised in Annapolis and vowed to never live in Anne Arundel County where she presently resides with her husband\, 2 children\, 1 dog\, 1 cat and 8 chickens. \n  \nHope to see you THIS Thursday\, August 30th at 6:15pm\, at 49 West! \n  \nAnd on Sept 27\, Lori Gross will present at on Antarctic Citizen Science! \n  \nCheers! \nTracy Gill and Andy Loftus \n  \nPS – Below are some great events sent by Carl Benson\, of the Climate Stewards of Annapolis: \n  \nClimate Stewards\, \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarl Benson via googlegroups.com\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClimate Stewards\, \nIt was great to see all the Climate Stewards who came out in July to show our appreciation for Phil Favero’s work in establishing the Climate Stewards.  We’ve collected many notes of appreciation for our farewell sunflower parachute for Phil.  Everyone is welcome contribute a message on a sunflower seed of change for inclusion on the parachute banner.  If you haven’t had a chance but wish to contribute a message\, please send a message of appreciation to me at csgabenson@gmail.com and we will add it to the parachute. \nPlease join us at the following upcoming events: \nSept 7: Movie High Tide in Dorchester \nIn partnership with the Anne Arundel Group of the Sierra Club\, we be showing the film High Tide in Dorchester at on Friday\, September 7 at 7 PM at the Annapolis Friends Meeting House.  The film fosters a conversation about climate change and related impacts of sea level rise and erosion\, and we will leverage that conversation into action. The focus\, Dorchester County\, is already experiencing the future that increasingly faces coastal areas worldwide. This low-lying county on the Eastern Shore is the fourth largest of Maryland’s 23 counties by land area\, but it is destined to drop to the 14th largest by 2100 — or sooner — as waters rise and erosion worsens. We will hear from candidates who are running for office in Annapolis about their views on protecting our climate and environment. \nSept 8: Rise for Climate\nPeople are rising up around the world to demand real climate leadership from every level of government. On September 8\, thousands will march in San Francisco for the largest climate march the West Coast has ever seen. Together we will Rise for Climate\, Jobs & Justice as part of a global day of action to demand our elected leaders commit to no new fossil fuels and a just and fair transition to 100% renewable energy.  Please join us at local actions as we hold our local leaders to account and demand that they walk the talk on climate action. \nSept 8: Maryland Events \n\nHoward County\, Clarksville Commons\, 2-5 PM.  Join HoCo Climate Action for the Clarksville Common’s Drive Electric Car Week event.  Come hear from electric car owners and dealers and information from climate groups.  Music\, family fun and loads of informationon what is going on in Maryland to address climate change.  Info here.\nMontgomery County\, Rockville Town Square\, 2-4 PM.  Join 350 MoCo for an extraordinary line-up of speakers\, together with great music\, voter registration\, and wonderful kids activities.  Info here.\nBaltimore\, War Memorial\, Noon-4 PM.  Join the Baltimore Peoples Climate Movement for a festival with art\, performances\, and opportunities to take action for climate justice.  Info here.\n\nSept 13: Business Meeting\, Thursday\, September 13\nPlease join us to plan our future events and strategies to address climate change.  All are welcome. \nSept 20: Reversing Global Warming: An Introduction to Drawdown. Pachamama’s Drawdown Project gives us hope! Project Drawdown is a coalition of more than 200 researchers and other experts from 22 countries led by author\, environmentalist\, and entrepreneur Paul Hawken. Over the course of 5 years of rigorous scientific research\, they identified and modeled the 100 most substantive\, already existing solutions for addressing global warming and revealed astounding news: that it is possible not just to slow global warming\, but to actually reverse it by 2050.Join Lore Rosenthal for a two hour in-person experience that invites participants to see both the possibility of reversing global warming and that they have an important role to play in that process. Through videos and group activities\, participants learn about a comprehensive plan to reverse global warming from Project Drawdown. This discussion will be held on Thursday\, September 20\, from 7-9 PM at the Annapolis Friends Meeting House. This is packed program for 2 hours so please be prompt\, and let us know you are coming here: https://connect.pachamama.org/node/1202 \nOct 11: Discussion on Particulate Matter. We are planning a discussion about how particulate matter pollution affects us and is related to climate change. We will hear from the Community Engagement\, Environmental Justice and Health Laboratory at the University of Maryland School of Public Health and from the Maryland Environmental Health Network. \nI look forward to seeing you at some of these events.  Thanks for all you do to protect our common climate. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Jason Anick / Jason Yeager Quartet
DESCRIPTION: \nJason Anick/Jason Yeager Quartet\n\nJason Anick – Violin/Mandolin\nJason Yeager – Piano\nGreg Loughman – Bass\nMike Connors – Drums\n\nRejecting the confining roles of strict categorization\, the Jason Anick/Jason Yeager Quartet draws on the wide swath of musical interests of its co-leaders\, blending straight-ahead and post-bop jazz\, world music\, funk and pop\, eagerly embracing what Anick and Yeager have defined as “jazz without borders.” Their debut album\, United\, displayed the virtuosic talents of both of these formidable instrumentalists. Featuring Jazz elites like Jason Palmer and George Garzone\, United\, garnered rave reviews including 4.5 stars from Downbeat Magazine. \n\nOne of the youngest violin professors at Boston’s Berklee College of Music\, Anick is considered “a rising star in the world of jazz violin and mandolin” (Downbeat Magazine). In addition to leading his own contemporary jazz ensemble and performing with the Rhythm Future Quartet\, Anick has been touring and recording with Grammy award-winning Nashville guitar virtuoso John Jorgenson since 2008 when he was recruited while still a senior at the Hartt Conservatory.Over the past few years\, Jason has been focusing on arranging and composing for the Rhythm Future Quartet\, which he started with Finnish guitarist Olli Soikkeli. With performances all over the U.S. and Europe\, the Rhythm Future Quartet is rapidly becoming one of the preeminent Gypsy jazz groups in the country.
