Thursday, June 26, 2025, 6:00-7:15pm – How to Tell Stories About Science the NPR Way

Speaker: Christopher Joyce, Retired Science and Environment Journalist, National Public Radio

About the Talk: Science created our world, yet few people understand how science works. To reach them, you need to get beyond the numbers and jargon and engage people with storytelling. Journalists do that, but anyone now with social media skills can do that as well — so long as they know the principles of storytelling.

About the Speaker: Christopher Joyce learned writing skills covering politics in Washington D.C. but switched to science in 1980. After writing for newspapers, magazines and authoring two books, Chris moved to National Public Radio, noted for its long-form audio style; he was a correspondent there for nearly three decades. He worked on science news as well as a natural history program with the National Geographic Society. His passion is making science fun and fascinating by using classic storytelling techniques. He’ll share those techniques, along with some NPR stories as examples.
