Human exploration and ultimately colonization of Mars has long been a dream of scientists and science fiction writers, and something now being actively championed by Elon Musk of SpaceX. This talk looks at the philosophical, technological and moral problems associated with such an effort, and suggests we should be slow to put boots on the Red Planet’s surface because, among other things, we currently don’t know how to do that safely and it might cause irreparable harm to Mars and any possible life that could exist there.
