Title: Hurricanes 101
Speaker: Avichal Mehra, PhD, Deputy Director of the Ocean Prediction Center of NOAA’s National Weather Service.
About the Talk: Why do Hurricanes occur? What do they look like? How does National Weather Service predict them? Historical impact of Hurricanes on US mainland.
About the Speaker: Dr. Avichal Mehra has over 25 years of experience leading and performing scientific development and research in the areas of operational forecasting, including stand-alone global oceans models, coupled atmosphere-land-ocean-wave models, coupled Hurricane models, numerical analysis, model diagnostics, and analyzing and interpreting geophysical data and model results.
He serves as the Deputy Director of the Ocean Prediction Center of NOAA’s National Weather Service. OPC provides the world’s best marine forecasts and critical decision support services for nearly $2T in imports and exports transported aboard 60,000 ocean-faring vessels through U.S. seaports each year. OPC is a combined operation, applied research, development and transition organization which provides analyses, warnings, forecasts, and specialized marine weather and sea ice related decision support products and services to protect life and property at sea and enhance the national economy.
Dr. Mehra got my MS and PhD from University of Virginia and he is an ardent UVA sports fan. He support all DC professional sports teams and is always looking for opportunities to attend their home games. Avichal is also a huge Cricket fan! Other than sports, he enjoy walking/hiking and reading, epsecially world history, science and science fiction.
