Second Act – For the Love of Art

49 West Restaurant is pleased to present Second Act – For the Love of Art – paintings by five recognized local artists who began pursuing their passion for making art after retiring from professional careers in architecture, transportation safety, nursing, communications/marketing and teaching.Artists represented are Maryann Brail, Bob Caffrey, Janet Ewing, Anne Sieling andJane Story. Exhibit Dates: Oct 3-30. Artist Opening Reception:Oct. 6 ,5:00-7:00 pm .

Artist’s Bios:

Maryann Brail.Arnold watercolor artist, Maryann Brail, began painting after her retirement as a nephrology nurse. During her career, she worked as the charge nurse in Dialysis Centers in Maryland. As a snowbird, she has had the opportunity to study with talented artists in Maryland and Florida.  Maryann and her husband happily relocated to Maryland from New Jersey in 1992.The Annapolis area was a perfect fit for two dingy racers who longed for a larger sailboat. The couple spent many years cruising the bay on their boat Boomer. Her love of the water and boats is evident in some of her paintings. A recent watercolor painting, The Golden Hour, was awarded Best in Show at the Benfield Art gallery.

Bob Caffrey. “Being a registered architect has given me a lot of practice over the years with drawing and colors.My paintings can be found in several collections, including the Dries Collection in Milwaukee.I was honored to be selected to participate in 2015 Paint Annapolis. The best prize for painting I ever got was first prize from the Maryland Federation of Art for a watercolor of my Volkswagen.Some of the things I like to paint include outdoor still-lifes (e.g. trunks of trees, curved walks, rocks, weeds. etc.).I like to make ugly or ordinary things look good(e.g. storm aftermaths, traffic jams, trash collection, etc.).And then there’s “negative space.”That’s a fancy expression for light against dark.Edges of forests look good using negative space. Janet (Kumer) Ewing. Janet, a native Annapolitan, grew up around artists. Her father, Harold Kumer, was an illustrator for the David Taylor Research Facility and her brother, Mike Kumer was a well known Annapolis artist who owned Annapolis Graphics.Janet decided to pursue a life long interest in painting after retiring from a career in highway safety as a Communication Director, Public Affairs Officer and Project Manager with the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. She has studied at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA,the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. the Anne Arundel Community College and the Chesapeake Fine Art Studios in Stevensville. She has been selected for Juried Shows at the Maryland Federation of Art and sold paintings in Annapolis and Florida. She has displayed portrait paintings at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, the Sandy Spring Museum and the Annapolis City Hall Art Gallery. She has also exhibited paintings at the Calvary Methodist Church, as well as various restaruants in Annapolis. She also has participated in a group show with Bob Caffrey and Ann Sieling at Gallery333 at the Universal Unitarian Church in Annapolis.In addition to painting landscapes, she loves the challenge of painting portraits and currently serves on the Board of the Maryland Society of Portrait Painters.

Anne Sieling.Anne is a Signature member of the Maryland Pastel Society, a member of the Maryland Society of Portrait Painters, the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Society, the Maryland Federation of the Arts and Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, and the Kent Island Federation of Art.. Before retirement, she was a certified Public Relations Consultant, working as public information officer for both state and county agencies. Working in pastelsearly on,when no longer hampered by a day job she began to paint seriously in oil, pastel and watercolor. She continues to paint and to study, utilizing the resources provided by membership and classes at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis, Maryland, and the Chesapeake Fine Art Studio in Stevensville. Her work has been exhibited at The Chesapeake Fine Art Studio, the Kent Island Federation of Art, “What’s Up Annapolis” Gallery, Baltimore/Washington International Airport, The Circle Gallery and the Gallery 333 at the Universal Unitarian Church in Annapolis. She was an award-winner at the 2016 Shades of Pastel Biennial National Juried Exhibit, and won a scholarship at her first paint out effort at Plein Air Stevensville, Maryland. Jane Story.Painting and playing music became a passion of mine after I retired from teaching. I joyfully take painting classes at the Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) and plein air workshops in France and Ireland as well as California, New Mexico and Coastal Art in Maine. I have shown my work at the AACC and the Maryland Federation of Art. My choice of medium is oil.

Making art is challenging.You are constantly refocusing, problem solving and generating your creative energy.Music inspired my art at different stages. 49 West is a great host for our Sunday morning jam sessions.They provide a welcoming environment for all the musicians as they come together to greet the day in Annapolis.
